    For now, though, that's it.

Who knows when we'll see England's men in action again.

Whenever it is, let's hope the cricket is half as compelling as it has been this summer.

    Bye for now.

Coverage of all the domestic competitions continues across the BBC; the T20 Blast, Bob Willis Trophy and Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy.

And England's women have just entered their own bubble for five T20 internationals against West Indies, the first of which is on Monday.

I think we're about done here. What a night. What a summer.

Thanks for being a part of it.

However, we are not done yet...

England head coach Chris Silverwood talking to Sky Sports: "There's been some fantastic cricket. I thought we saw a fantastic partnership there. It's been a hard-fought good series.

"We're always looking forward. It's been a good opportunity this summer to take a look at some people because we've not always had the chance to pick our full-strength team."

What have you been happiest with this summer?: "To get a full calendar has been nothing better than exceptional but it's been good to get some good competitive cricket. There was talk about if there would be a difference with no crowds but once they get out there their pride takes over and I'm not surprised by the cricket that we've seen."

What next?: "I'd like people to have a rest if they can because living in the bubble can be mentally and physically challenging. Obviously eight of them are jetting off to the IPL tomorrow but I'd like them to have a rest if possible. Hopefully the red-ball series in Sri Lanka goes ahead and then we'll see about India whether it's there or in the UAE, but hopefully it goes ahead."

  5. 'The cricket this summer has been remarkable'published at 21:41 BST 16 September 2020

What we've witnessed in the last few months in terms of drama has been remarkable. When you think the players have been locked up in cricket grounds, they have produced so many dramatic moments.

I think that's a big moment for Australia. From where they were on Sunday, if they'd lost that game and it looked like they would going into the last over, I don't know how Justin Langer would have picked them up. I don't know what he could have said. They deserved to win.

  6. Postpublished at 21:38 BST 16 September 2020

England captain Eoin Morgan: "We were still in the game going into the last over. When you can break big partnerships it probably gets more difficult to bat as the game goes on and having someone like Adil Rashid gives us that option too if the game is getting away from us. Australia were just too good for us.

"Having lost two early wickets, to get over 300 was a positive for us and Jonny Bairstow was outstanding today alongside the likes of Sam Billings and Chris Woakes.

"Alex Carey and Glenn Maxwell played outstandingly well. It's always an interesting challenge, one that the bowlers are always up for. The bowlers never gave up. It's been an amazing summer and it's been great to get out full quota of fixtures in this summer.

"Sometimes when you're beaten by the better side you've just got to put your hand up and today was one of those games."

How have you found the summer?: "With the less experienced squads, because of the focus on Test cricket, it's been a good and valuable exercise. Some guys have taken opportunities with both hands like Sam Billings and Dawid Malan."

We generally don't get used to this England side losing games like that. Over the last couple of years we've got used to them winning games like that, whenever it's been a tight game they've generally won.

Australia captain Aaron Finch: "It was an incredible game of cricket, action aplenty.

"Yeah, we thought we were in trouble, absolutely. Maxi is in the team to do a specific role, to try to swing the momentum. He dragged it back. That partnership was fantastic. I'm really proud of both of them.

"I don't think there are many bowlers in the world who can hang with him when he's having one of those days."

Crazy from England, two 90mph bowlers left with an over each at the end of 50, both with an economy rate far less than Rashid. What are we thinking?

    Anon

Utterly speechless at Rashid bowling the last over. Archer or Wood bowling full, straight Yorkers surely. Morgan has been brilliant until the crucial moment, baffling decision.

Man of the match and series Glenn Maxwell: "It wasn't an ideal situation when I came in, but I had a bit of a licence to go for it and luckily enough I hit the middle of the bat.

"It was a short boundary that we tried to target as much as we could. It was pretty tempting, but I tried to pick my moments. I was pretty confident it would travel.

"I'm trusting my technique and I feel calm at the crease. That has been the key.

"The bubble has been enjoyable. We've tried to keep each other busy."

We were here a few weeks ago for the partnership between Jos Buttler and Chris Woakes that saw England over the line against Pakistan and we've just witnessed another fantastic sixth-wicket partnership. It was full of skill, calmness, running between the wickets, a little bit of fortune, but they targeted the short leg-side boundary at the right times.

Ashic: What a waste... Adil Rashid's been devastatingly poor today, and lost us the series. Morgan's normally superb captaincy faltered... Root probably bowled for too long, and with 10 to defend and tail enders, why Rashid and not Curran or Wood is beyond me.

I don't think Eoin Morgan had a great night, not using Adil Rashid until Alex Carey and Glenn Maxwell were both in and on about 40 and bowling Joe Root for eight overs. I know he got two wickets but i thought that was overkill. Bowling a leg-spinner in the last over when you could use a pace bowler and hide it to the long boundary.

England will be disappointed. If I'm being brutally honest Adil Rashid hasn't been at his best in the last couple of games. With those mistakes it was too much for England.

Eoin Morgan is an excellent captain but that was a really poor decision.

Morgan just made a HUGE error bowling Rashid at the end! He has been picked all evening long!

It was a great game of cricket and a great way to finish the men's part of the international summer. England will be rueing those mistakes in defence of 302: the no-ball by Jofra Archer to dismiss Alex Carey and then the Jos Buttler drop of Glenn Maxwell off Adil Rashid. They were costly mistakes

Fair play to Australia though, it's all well and good getting those second lives but it's going on to build that partnership. It was faultless after that.

The Australia players are embracing on the balcony. For England there will be resigned thoughts of what could have been. They had this game won.
