    Breaking

    Surrey 439 & 280 v Kent 294 & 352-8

Well batted Wiaan Mulder, who hits two fours off Rikki Clarke in the final over as Kent bat through the final day to earn a draw against the reigning champions at Beckenham.

The South African, making his Championship debut, is 68 not out when the players shake hands, having faced exactly 100 balls.

Sean Dickson (91) and Heino Kuhn (81) were the other mainstays of Kent's batting - with Dickson falling just nine runs short of a century in each innings.

Surrey, who were a bowler short for most of the day because of Sam Curran's injury, collect 13 points and have now started their defence of the title with three draws, with Kent collecting 10.

  5. Can Clarke do it?published at 18:27 BST 23 May 2019

    Surrey 439 & 280 v Kent 294 & 344-8

Another over ticks by. Four from it. Surrey's Rikki Clarke has six balls to take two wickets.

  6. Mulder defies Surreypublished at 18:25 BST 23 May 2019

    Surrey 439 & 280 v Kent 294 & 340-8

Wiaan Mulder hits a boundary off Rikki Clarke to progress to 60 not out.

Surrey have two overs, or 12 balls, left to try and take the two wickets they need to win.

  7. NORTHAMPTONSHIRE DRAW WITH SUSSEXpublished at 18:20 BST 23 May 2019
    Breaking

    Sussex 422 & 339-4 dec v Northants 368 & 288-6

Adam Rossington and Brett Hutton share an unbroken 70-run partnership over the final 35 overs to secure a draw for Northants against Sussex at Wantage Road.

Set a target of 394, they were in with a chance while Josh Cobb was at the crease, making 68, but once he was bowled by Mir Hamza, who took 4-51, and Rob keogh and Temba Bavuma went in the same over, survival became their main objective.

Rossington hit five fours in his 69 not out and Hutton finished unbeaten on 25.

Sussex take 13 points from the game and Northants 11.

  8. Podmore stays putpublished at 18:18 BST 23 May 2019

    Surrey 439 & 280 v Kent 294 & 333-8

Almost a mix-up at the start of a new Conor McKerr over as Wiaan Mulder plays into the leg-side and sets off for a single. He is sent back by Harry Podmore, who is presumably in no rush to be on strike.

Mulder does take one from McKerr's fourth delivery and Podmore manages to survive the final two with relative comfort. Three overs to go.

  9. wicket

    WICKET Stevens c Foakes b Clarke 5published at 18:13 BST 23 May 2019

    Surrey 439 & 280 v Kent 294 & 333-8

What a delivery to receive this late in the day. Darren Stevens departs at Beckenham with the score on triple Nelson after a superb leg-cutter by Rikki Clarke finds the edge and keeper Ben Foakes does the rest.

There are four overs and one ball to go in this game. Can Surrey force a victory?

  10. Batty back for Surreypublished at 18:07 BST 23 May 2019

    Surrey 439 & 280 v Kent 294 & 332-7

Time is running out for Surrey, who won games like these when they steamrollered their way to the title last summer. Gareth Batty is summoned for a last burst of spin with six overs remaining. Will there be a late twist or two? It's a 41-year-old bowling to a 43-year-old as Darren Stevens safely negotiates a maiden.

  11. Northants close to survivalpublished at 18:00 BST 23 May 2019

    Sussex 422 & 339-4 dec v Northants 368 & 277-6

There's been some good cricket played over the last four days but this game is now petering out at Wantage Road.

An Adam Rossington single off Chris Jordan is the only scoring stroke in the last over and there are just six remaining.

  12. 50 runs

for Wiaan Mulderpublished at 17:50 BST 23 May 2019

    Surrey 439 & 280 v Kent 294 & 325-7

Conor McKerr drops short and Wiaan Mulder cracks it square for four to reach his first Championship fifty for Kent. It's taken him 71 balls and this has been a tremendous fighting innings for his side, who now have nine over to survive to secure a draw against the reigning champions.

Wonder what he looks like? Wonder no longer.

  13. Sussex take new ballpublished at 17:49 BST 23 May 2019

    Sussex 422 & 339-4 dec v Northants 368 & 275-6

New ball at Northampton. Mir Hamza takes it - but there's a single and leg bye from that over.

    Nine overs to go.

  14. Stevens clings on for Kentpublished at 17:48 BST 23 May 2019

    Surrey 429 & 280 v Kent 294 & 315-7

Morne Morkel thinks he has Darren Stevens and he cannot believe it when the umpire rejects his lbw appeal. Four leg byes don't make him any happier and he ends the over with a bouncer which Stevens sways out of the way to avoid. Ten overs to go. Surrey running out of time.

  15. 'We were well beaten' - Notts coach Moorespublished at 17:42 BST 23 May 2019

Result: Hampshire (22pts) beat Nottinghamshire (4pts) by 244 runs

Nottinghamshire head coach Peter Moores didn't hold back after his side's 244-run defeat to Hampshire on the Isle of Wight.

Skipper Steven Mullaney was the one player to escape criticism after his 102 in the first innings.

"There is no hiding place from it and we have been well beaten," Moores told BBC Radio Nottingham.

"It isn't the first time the batting unit hasn't fired but bowling-wise there are a couple of bowlers who need to step up.

"When you get your chance, you need to take it. Steven Mullaney showed us that."

  16. 50 runs

for Adam Rossingtonpublished at 17:37 BST 23 May 2019

    Sussex 422 & 339-4 dec v Northants 368 & 273-6

Adam Rossington reaches 50 off 126 balls with two runs to end a Luke Wells over. He then sweeps the same bowler fine for four in his next.

Two to go before the new ball that surely represents Sussex's last throw of the dice or similar cliche.

  17. Streaky four for Stevenspublished at 17:36 BST 23 May 2019

    Surrey 439 & 280 v Kent 294 & 313-7

Near thing. Darren Stevens flashes at a ball from Morne Morkel and the ball just clears the Surrey slips. Not the best of shots at this stage but it brings him a boundary. Wiaan Mulder is 42 not out at the other end.

  18. wicket

    WICKET Blake c Jacks b Elgar 8published at 17:29 BST 23 May 2019

    Surrey 439 & 280 v Kent 294 & 308-7

Alex Blake attempts to drive a ball from Morne Morkel and is fortunate not to play on as the ball runs away off the inside edge. He's not so lucky in the next over as he falls to a short leg catch off spinner Dean Elgar. Three more wickets needed by Surrey. Darren Stevens is the new batsman.

  19. Kent total reaches 300published at 17:22 BST 23 May 2019

    Surrey 439 & 280 v Kent 294 & 303-6

Kent reach 300 as Wiaan Mulder pushes a ball from Dean Elgar down to mid-off and trots through for a single. Mulder miscues a sweep shot at the end of the over but under-edges thought wicketkeeper Ben Foakes' legs and adds two more to take him to 37 not out. Surrey have 15 overs left to take the four wickets they need.

  20. Briggs keeps it tightpublished at 17:14 BST 23 May 2019

    Sussex 422 & 339-4 dec v Northants 368 & 256-6

A couple of singles from the latest Danny Briggs over at Wantage Road and if there is a ray of hope for Sussex, it is that the new ball will be available in 10 overs. That would then leave them another 10 to try and finish the job. Northants need another 138.
