• Holders Notts Outlaws were outclassed as they started the defence of their T20 Blast title with a eight-wicket defeat by Birmingham Bears.
• Leicestershire Foxes successfully chase 219 to beat Northants Steelbacks in a high-scoring contest at Wantage Road.
• Sussex beat Essex by 36 runs at Chelmsford, with David Wiese claiming 5-24 for the visitors.

Notts were well beaten by Birmingham Bears tonight, but skipper Dan Christian was quick to point out that last year's winners did not make the best of starts a year ago.

“We lost our first two matches last year and still went on to win it," he told BBC Radio Nottingham. "So it’s not the end of the world.

"We’ve just got to get back on the horse when we play Northants on Friday.

“We never got any momentum and were at least 30 under par but if we’d been able to take a few wickets early on, then you never know.

"Realistically, it was going to be difficult because, whatever the wicket looks like here you know it is going to play well and it’s a small ground with a fast outfield."

There's disappointment for Essex, whose hopes really faded when Varun Chopra (64) was bowled by Afghanistan's Rashid Khan in the 17th over.

Sussex's David Wiese (5-24) takes three wickets in the 19th over and Essex's hopes are all but over.

Meanwhile, at Chelmsford - where play started later than at tonight's other two games - Sussex are closing in on victory.

Ben Raine's 23 from seven balls arguably tipped the match in the Foxes' favour. Dramatic stuff.

Wow! That's some fightback. Leicestershire claim a remarkable win as Colin Ackermann (66 not out) hits a six to clinch victory with two balls to spare.

Northants are beaten, despite earlier setting their highest ever T20 score.

Those six penalty runs that were awarded for Northants' slow over rate played their part too.

Rory Kleinveldt starts the final over with five wides. What a time to do that. Leicestershire are closing in on a stunning comeback victory.

Now then. Hold on. Northants have been penalised for a slow over rate... And have been penalised six runs. Now Leicestershire need 14 to win from the final over.

Bears coach Jim Troughton was delighted with the way last year's beaten T20 finalists took their revenge over holders Notts.

“Ian Bell is in fantastic nick," Troughton told BBC WM. "And he deserves to be too, as he worked incredibly hard over the winter.

"He manoeuvred the ball about beautifully and Sam Hain came in and continued his good form on the back of some good innings for the Lions.

"What was I worried about at halfway?

"And, as for young Henry Brookes, it looks like everything he touches turns to gold right now after the way he started with that wicket maiden."

This chase is becoming quite something. Leicestershire looked dead and buried half an hour ago. Now they're hopeful...

Varun Chopra is past 50 for Essex and alongside Ashar Zaidi (17).

Nearly 13 an over is needed for the hosts to win though. They've got work to do.

Leicestershire lose the wicket of Mohammad Nabi, but his replacement - Ben Raine - hits one away for six from the first ball that he faces! Talk about confidence...

The visitors need another 49 runs to win from three overs.

Some news on Notts batsman Chris Nash, who was hurt attempting a catch early in the Birmingham Bears innings - he has damaged his right shoulder and will go to hospital for a scan later.

Let's hope it's not too serious.

You've got to give a lot of credit to how Birmingham Bears performed - they were brilliant with the ball and in the field, and with the bat they were very clinical.

But Notts Outlaws were really poor in all departments. They got off a poor start and that continued bar a but of an onslaught from Luke Fletcher, and they were poor in the field.

For me they're one of the best sides in the tournament with the ball, they've got plenty of variation in their bowling attack, but tonight they just weren't good enough.
