  1. See you tomorrowpublished at 17:58 BST 12 September 2017

And that is it from us for the day.

It has been a pretty good one for Mark Stoneman, Neil Dexter, Cameron Bancroft and Steven Davies who all made centuries.

The main story though is Essex who continued their seemingly nerveless surge towards a seventh County Championship title with an excellent first day against Warwickshire.

We’ll be back tomorrow to see if that continues. See you then.

    Surrey 398-3 (96 overs) v Yorkshire

Surrey finish just two runs short of claiming maximum batting points on the opening day at the Oval - a day which Yorkshire will hope to forget as soon as possible.

After England opener Mark Stoneman's high-quality 131, Kumar Sangakkara (85*) and Ben Foakes (64*) have put on 143 in 34.4 overs for the fourth wicket. Could this be the game when they finally achieve a second victory of the season following nine draws?

  4. Memorable day for Dexterpublished at 17:50 BST 12 September 2017

    Leicestershire 325-7 (93 overs) v Worcestershire

After the brief resumption which allowed Neil Dexter to complete his hundred, play ends three overs early at New Road because of bad light. Dexter remains on 102 not out after an unbroken stand of 40 with Zak Chappell, whose 32 not out includes six fours.

Work to do here for Worcestershire, who are favourites, along with leaders Notts, for a promotion spot, but cannot afford any slips with Northants, Sussex and Kent in hot pursuit.

  5. Derbyshire deny Wiesepublished at 17:47 BST 12 September 2017

    Derbyshire 338-9 (96 overs) v Sussex

Derbyshire survive the full allocation on the opening day at Hove - just - as youngster Hamidullah Qadri prevents David Wiese from completing a 'five-for' in the day's final over.

The South African's figures of 4-63 from 21 overs are impressive, though, and the visitors could yet count the cost of four batsmen passing 40 and none of them going on to play a major innings. Luis Reece and Billy Godleman were the top scorers, both making 51.

  6. Close of playpublished at 17:45 BST 12 September 2017

    Somerset 330-9 (96 overs) v Lancashire

And that is the close at Taunton.

A frustrating day for second-placed Lancashire as second-bottom Somerset end on 330-9 thanks mostly to Steven Davies' brilliant 111.

England's Stuart Broad joined in a game of street cricket in Downing Street this afternoon, organised by Chance to Shine Street, which looks to engage young people aged 8-24 in areas of socio-economic disadvantage in street cricket.

  8. Final over at Tauntonpublished at 17:40 BST 12 September 2017

    Somerset 330-9 (95 overs overs) v Lancashire

One more over to go on day one in the match between Somerset and Lancashire.

Jack Leach is still hitting boundaries, his latest a four off Ryan McLaren, and has been joined by last man Tim Groenewald.

Can Lancashire knock either over in the final six deliveries?

  9. 100 runs

for Neil Dexterpublished at 17:36 BST 12 September 2017

    Leicestershire 321-7 (91.4 overs) v Worcestershire

A boundary off Josh Tongue and there it is, the 17th first-class century of Neil Dexter's career. It took him only 120 balls and has put his side back on an even keel after they were 25-3 during the morning session.

  10. Play resumes at New Roadpublished at 17:35 BST 12 September 2017

    Leicestershire 313-7 (91 overs) v Worcestershire

They are back on at New Road, so Neil Dexter will have the chance to complete his hundred after all. It's Zak Chappell, though, who dominates proceedings after the players return to the field with two fours off Josh Tongue and another brace in the next over, bowled by Ed Barnard.

  11. wicket

    WICKET Davies (b Bailey) 111published at 17:33 BST 12 September 2017

    Somerset 322-9 (93.3 overs) v Lancashire

The end of one of the knocks of the day.

Somerset's Steven Davies is out bowled via an inside edge by Tom Bailey to fall for 111.

His innings lasted 226 minutes or 174 balls and included 12 fours. Can Lancashire wrap up the innings before the close? They have two and a bit overs to do it.

  12. 100 runs

partnership for Surreypublished at 17:31 BST 12 September 2017

    Surrey 372-3 (91 overs) v Yorkshire

Kumar Sangakkara and Ben Foakes are seeing off the new ball with some aplomb at the Oval and their fourth-wicket partnership has reached three figures. Surrey have four batting points in the bank and the fifth looks a formality barring a dramatic collapse.

Ben Foakes hits four successive boundaries off Jack Brooks to bring up a 91-ball fifty, and there are four overs left in the day's play.

  13. Excellent day for Essexpublished at 17:28 BST 12 September 2017

    Essex 69-0 (21 over) v Warwickshire 201

Essex came into this match knowing that a win could give them a first Division One title since 1992 if Lancashire's result went their way.

The leaders are certainly doing their bit. Jamie Porter and Simon Harmer both took four wickets as Warwickshire were bowled out cheaply with Dominic Sibley (76) the only man to make 50.

Then, against some good bowling from the hosts, openers Varun Chopra (42 not out) and Nick Browne (23 not out) made it through to the close.

Could this week be the week?

  14. Bancroft's day at Bristolpublished at 17:26 BST 12 September 2017

    Gloucestershire 242-5 (86.3 overs) v Kent

Play comes to an end nine and half overs early in Bristol because of bad light. Gloucestershire opener Cameron Bancroft has been the star performer on day one, hitting a six and 13 fours in an unbeaten 124.

Kent need to win this match to keep their promotion hopes alive, but their most successful bowler so far has been occasional leg-spinner Joe Denly with 2-64, including the wicket of Chris Dent for 59 after an opening stand of 141 with Bancroft.

  15. Close of play - Bad lightpublished at 17:25 BST 12 September 2017

    Essex 69-0 (21 over) v Warwickshire 201

The darkness has rolled in in Birmingham and the umpires have taken the players off.

It is much lighter than the Test match last week and the floodlights are on at Edgbaston. Make of that what you will.

All in all it has been a brilliant day for league leaders Essex. They reach 69-0 and it is confirmed as the close.

  16. Northants on top in Cardiffpublished at 17:23 BST 12 September 2017

    Glamorgan 207 v Northamptonshire 59-2 (15.4 overs)

Umpires Stephen Gale and David Millns waste no time in deciding there is no prospect of a resumption this evening and that's it for the day at the SSE Swalec. Very much Northamptonshire's day following Richard Gleeson's 5-60 to help bowl out Glamorgan in 64.1 overs.

The Welsh county, though, have picked up a couple of wickets to give them something positive to hold onto before tomorrow's resumption. Here's the second of them.

  17. 6 runs

    Six for Leach!published at 17:23 BST 12 September 2017

    Somerset 312-8 (91 overs) v Lancashire

Well I said Somerset's Steven Davies might attack but in fact it's number 10 batsman Jack Leach doing just that.

He whacks leg-spinner Matt Parkinson over mid-wicket for six!

  18. Chopra punishing former clubpublished at 17:21 BST 12 September 2017

    Essex 69-0 (20 over) v Warwickshire 201

    Shot!

Beautiful from Varun Chopra as he drives Sidebottom through extra cover for four.

Chopra (42 not out) knows this ground well of course. He played much of his career at Warwickshire and is currently making them toil.

  19. Third batting point for Somersetpublished at 17:19 BST 12 September 2017

    Somerset 301-8 (90 overs) v Lancashire

300 up for Somerset and with it the third batting point.

It is brought up by Jack Leach with a push to mid-off off Stephen Parry.

Will Steven Davies now cut loose with just two wickets left?

  20. Sangakkara make Yorkshire toilpublished at 17:18 BST 12 September 2017

    Surrey 342-3 (87 overs) v Yorkshire

You would imagine that Yorkshire's bowlers are fed up with toiling away while Kumar Sangakkara racks up the runs against them.

He made 121 against them in the One-Day Cup in June, then an unbeaten 180 in the Championship game at Headingley later that month. Now he's on to 64 not out and his partnership with Ben Foakes (29*) is worth 87 so far.
