Wawrinka 7-5 7-6 (9-7) Monfils
Image source, ReutersIf France are going to have a man in the Roland Garros quarter-finals, joining the two women in the last eight, then Gael Monfils is going to have to do it the hard way.
But he never does it easy, does he? The Frenchman fights back twice in the breaker, from 3-1 and 6-3 down, batting off three set points for Wawrinka.
A fourth goes begging when Stan guides a forehand return over the baseline, then he earns a fifth with a perfect forehand that clips the white paint.
This time the Swiss third seed takes his chance, pulling Monfils out wide and then swatting down a net volley to take the second set.
