Thoughts turned to jump racing's Cheltenham Festival in March after Moon Racer, the winner of the Festival's Champion Bumper [flat race for national hunt horses] in 2015, made a successful debut over hurdles, narrowly beating Ballyandy - the 2016 champion- at Perth (3:20).

Successful trainer David Pipe is planning a campaign that could take the lightly-raced seven-year-old, ridden by Tom Scudamore, to Cheltenham's Supreme Novices Hurdle next year. 

The Martyn Meade-trained colt Eminent became the latest offspring of champion racehorse-turned-stallion Frankel to make the winners' circle when storming home to victory on his racecourse debut, at Newmarket ridden by jockey Jim Crowley.

Speaking as bookies began to offer odds on Eminent for next year's 2000 Guineas, Meade came up with perhaps the quote of the day: "Luckily he (Crowley) managed to pull him up before hitting the High Street."

Sheffield Wednesday boss Carlos Carvalhal has said he has known for a while that winger Jeremy Helan wanted to retire to focus on religion.

The 24-year-old Frenchman, a devout Muslim, is set to retire from the game.

Carvalhal told BBC Radio Sheffield: "It's not new for me. It's something I've talked to him about since the start of the season.

"When he talked with me I understood and I just said to him to take some time to be sure about the decision.

"In that period he was very professional - he's a nice guy - but I must tell you that his head isn't in football."

Premier League B teams and 'non-English' clubs will not be included in plans to reform the structure of English league football, according to the EFL.

Double Paralympic gold medallist Liam Malone says running helped him deal with his mother's death from bowel cancer in 2012.

The three-time Rio medal winner said it was his silver, won on his mum's birthday, that was the most special to him.

"That medal is far more important than the two golds to me," he said.

In an interview at NZME Central, the 22-year-old Wellington-based athlete joked he turned to running after his original strategy for dealing with his grief - smoking and drinking heavily - failed to work.

Premier League B teams and “non English” clubs ruled out of discussions on reform of English football pyramid.

The EFL and the 72 clubs it represents have collectively ruled out including Premier League B teams in future plans to reform the structure of English football.

Frankie Dettori has been reflecting on his 'Magnificent Seven', 20 years after he went through the card at Ascot.

Dettori's wins cost bookmakers an estimated £40m.

He told BBC Radio 5 live: "For sporting achievement, it's my greatest thing that I've ever done, and in horse racing. It would be very hard to match something like that.

"And, second, there's a fairytale scenario where bookmakers lost £40m, and wherever I went, in every part of the country, I had so many people coming up to me who'd won so much money on that day, and it changed people's lives, so it's a very amazing thing.

"I moved the stock market [because of fears about bookmakers' losses]. It was crazy what happened, but it's nice that it can happen and people made a lot of money."

Ajax's Dutch Cup 5-0 victory over Willem II saw the first player sent off by a video referee.

Official Danny Makkelie took charge of Wednesday's game with Pol van Boekel assisting from a van outside.

With Ajax 2-0 up, Willem's Anouar Kali was shown a yellow card by Makkelie for a challenge on Lasse Schone.

However, upon watching the incident back, Van Boekel indicated Kali should be shown a red. 

The referee corrected his initial decision and Ajax made the man advantage count, going on to add a further three goals.

Play has restarted at Lord's and Yorkshire have done it - a four from last man Ryan Sidebottom means they have a crucial bonus point that keeps the County Championship a three-hose race.

The White Rose are 353-9 against Middlesex, 83 ahead of their title rivals. Somerset are the other team in contention.

Newport boss Warren Feeney has revealed Manchester City turned down his request to watch the team train.

City are staying in Wales in between their back to back games with Swansea.

Feeney said: "It was a big 'no' from them.

"There was a possibility, but I think it's Pep's ruthlessness that he likes to keep it all in house which you can understand as they're a world class team."

More on the news that Great Britain have been drawn away to Canada in the first round of the 2017 Davis Cup World Group.

The fixture on 3-5 February could feature a meeting between world number two Andy Murray and Canada's world number six Milos Raonic.

Murray beat Raonic in this Wimbledon year's final to win his third Grand Slam title.

Britain and Canada have faced each other only once before in the Davis Cup -in Bournemouth in 1967, external - as a host team comprising Mike Sangster, Roger Taylor and Bobby Wilson won 4-1.

New York Yankees rookie catcher Gary Sanchez has had a summer to remember.
