Ephron Mason-Clark's 86th-minute goal meant Coventry City were the day's big winners as Frank Lampard's side moved five points clear at the top of the Championship.

The Sky Blues emerged victorious 1-0 in a top-of-table clash with Stoke City as Lampard got one over former Coventry boss Mark Robins.

There was no Rob Edwards at Middlesbrough today as he seemingly closes in on a move to Premier League Wolves but it was no problem for the Teessiders as they beat Birmingham City to return to the automatic promotion places.

At the other end of the table, Norwich City surrendered a 1-0 lead to lose 2-1 against Leicester City and record a seventh consecutive home defeat this season.

Southampton made it two wins from two under interim boss Tonda Eckert with a 3-1 win over the league's bottom side Sheffield Wednesday, and Derby County won their fifth match in a row with victory at Ewood Park against Blackburn Rovers.

Hull City continued their fine form with an entertaining 3-2 win over Portsmouth, while Millwall and Preston North End missed an opportunity to strengthen their claims for an automatic promotion place with a 1-1 draw at The Den.

Ipswich hit four at Swansea to move up to seventh, while West Brom came from behind to beat Oxford.

Manning has to go - no team comes back from eight home defeats in a row.

    Andrew Larkman, Kingswinford

Norwich City faithful deserve better! I feel this has to be the final straw.

    Tom G, Norwich

This isn't just Manning's fault. In the last few months, Knapper has sacked two coaches, appointed one with a 30% win rate in the Championship, and wasted £55m on players not good enough. The worst squad here since 2009. Attanasio needs to get a grip and act now.

    Julian Hudson, Norwich

Norwich are second bottom and four points adrift of safety after an 11th league game without a win today.

  4. 'Moment of madness cost us at least a point' - Jonespublished at 18:24 GMT 8 November 2025

    FT: Wrexham 1-0 Charlton

    Charlton Athletic

Charlton Athletic boss Nathan Jones said:

"It's a moment of madness that's cost us at least a point.

"I thought it was a tight game, we had a lot of chances in the first half and should have been ahead.

"It's taken that bit of madness to break the deadlock. But I'm proud of the group for what they've given me because I can't ask for any more."

Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson told BBC Wales:

"It was always going to be a tough game. Charlton are a good side, they're strong and don't give much away.

"I felt we deserved to win on the balance of play.

"Enormous credit to our lads today, Pompey away on a Wednesday night and playing again today, I thought the energy levels were good. We're so pleased with the win."

    FT: Norwich 1-2 Leicester

    Norwich City

Norwich City boss Liam Manning told BBC Radio Norfolk:

“We were okay without, for me, testing their keeper enough. Which has been a consistent thing around quality in attacking areas.

“When you look at the plan, the way we pressed, the way we got after them, the way we played forward and the way we were a bit more direct in what we did was good.

“But in the last 15-20 minutes we can’t sustain the level of intensity that you need to and, unfortunately the challenge is to be able to have real impact off the bench to sustain the levels when we have the volume of injuries we have got”

When asked about the protests and why he thinks he should be remain in charge, Manning added: “My whole thing is not to put on a sales pitch, my whole thing is to thank the fans today. I thought they were outstanding to the final whistle.

“In a tough moment and where we are at, I thought they showed what they are about today and really stuck with the group, which is the most important thing.

“And going forward that’s exactly what the lads will need.

“I don’t live my life with regrets, it’s part of my journey. I’m learning, I’m hurting, I’m frustrated and I’m hugely disappointed because this is a club I care deeply about. I didn’t come here to be where we are. But we are, so I will do a lot of learning as to why.”

  7. Blues 'unsettled' Middlesbrough - Daviespublished at 18:18 GMT 8 November 2025

    FT: Middlesbrough 2-1 Birmingham

    Birmingham City

Birmingham City boss Chris DaviesImage source, Shutterstock

Birmingham City manager Chris Davies said after the game:

"We really unsettled Middlesborough, they didn't get any rhythm or control on the match, which was excellent.

"And we did make chances, but we didn't turn those chances into goals and gave away to pretty sloppy ones ourselves.

"We responded after going down in the game but conceding just before half-time was really frustrating and a soft goal, I now it took a good deflection but it was a really poor goal form our point of view.

"They were galvanised by that and we should have been better. We gave them something to hang onto and they managed to do it.

"So there was enough there, I think we did create the more chances. We had more of the ball, we had more of the territory - so we had all the things you want to try and be dominant in a match, but we just couldn't turn it into a win."

    Middlesbrough

Adi Viveash spoke to Rob Law following Middlesbrough's 2-1 win against Birmingham.

Interim Middlesbrough boss Adi Viveash told BBC Radio Tees:

"It's been a very proud day for the club, Today is about the players and the fans, they fought together, they suffered together and we have come out on the right side of a really important victory.

"The positives are the resilience, the grit, the fight we showed.

"We dominated the opening 20 minutes and could have been two or three up. We had to change shape and had to find our feet.

"Birmingham pushed us back in the second half and it was an interesting last 10 minutes.

"It was a lovely feeling for the players at the end. It's been a really great day for unity, resilience, togetherness and hard work - that's what this town and football club represents, I think.

"I've been in the game a long time, it's not my first rodeo. We took training yesterday, training was good, it's all about focusing the players.

"When I was asked by the club this morning if I'd stand up and lead I said 'no problem' - I am come here to work, tro try and give my experience and help.

"It's been a bit of a roller-coaster. It's football. Life moves on. I am immensely proud of all the staff and feel very privileged to coach these players.

"It's lovely going into the international break with a win. The club's in a really strong position to attack whatever comes next for them.

"I'm 56-years-old and I've achieved a lot in the game but I have never led a team as a head coach in a proper game, that will live with me, whatever happens now it was very special and it meant a lot to me and my family."

  9. 'Incredibly frustrating and symptomatic of our season'published at 18:13 GMT 8 November 2025

FT: West Brom 2-1 Oxford United

    Oxford United

Oxford United head coach Gary Rowett told BBC Radio Oxford:

"I'm incredibly frustrated because that's been symptomatic of our performances this season in as much as we do a lot to get back in the game when the game's not perfect, but the games' never going to be perfect coming away from home to West Bromwich Albion.

"I thought we started a little bit slowly, allowed them to pin us in, but I didn't think we looked in too much trouble, I thought we blocked shots and we had to defend, but I can't remember too many big, big chances that they created.

"I had to remind our players that we're in a good position, we just have to step it up a little bit and I thought we kind of did at the start of the second half, we ended up getting a very good goal.

"But we lasted two minutes maybe and that's been the frustration, we just keep conceding very, very soft goals and keep conceding goals that I think we shouldn't concede.

"When you do that you don't really give yourself a good chance to win games."

  10. 'You could feel how important it was'published at 18:11 GMT 8 November 2025

FT: West Brom 2-1 Oxford United

    West Bromwich Albion

West Bromwich Albion head coach Ryan Mason told BBC WM:

"It was important, you could feel it, but not just the win - I thought the performance, the attitude, the intensity we played with was really pleasing after a really disappointing way to lose the game on Tuesday.

"I'm really happy with the reaction, we created so many opportunities, we probably should have scored a lot more than two, but I'm pleased to win the game.

"They scored against the run of play, in the first half we had 15 shots at the goal, we don't come away with anything to show from it, but that happens.

"The players stuck to what we worked on, what we wanted from them and some improvements today in terms of balls arriving in the box - I thought we had so many penalty box entries.

"We need to keep working on the final action and arriving in the areas we want to, but we scored two really good goals in my opinion today, so we're happy. "

The Saints interim manager said that the win over Sheffield Wednesday was for the fans.

Southampton interim boss Tonda Eckert speaking to BBC Radio Solent after back-to-back wins:

“It has been really pleasing week for us.

“There were some moments of the game I think we could have been better, especially in getting over the line.

“But I just told the boys in the room to not underestimate what we have done this week, I have to compliment the players for the resilience they have shown in the last two games.

“I have enjoyed every single day so far here with the football club, it meant a lot to walk out with the team today, there was a lot of humility and dignity for me, it was a special moment.”

  12. 'We're lacking a bit of belief and confidence'published at 18:05 GMT 8 November 2025

    FT: Sheff Utd 0-0 QPR

    Sheffield United

Sheffield United boss Chris WilderImage source, Shutterstock

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder told BBC Radio Sheffield:

“I’m a bit frustrated, like I imagine 27,000 of our supporters are. We’ve done more than enough [to win]. We needed the clean sheet after the goals we’ve conceded and the manner of the goals.

“The team are giving everything and the supporters recognised that. We’re obviously lacking a little bit of belief and confidence with the position we’re in and that equates to taking that little bit too long to make that decision.

“They’re a dangerous team with the two wide players and the pace at the top of the pitch, especially if you over-commit, so we had to get that balance right, which we did.

“We’ve gone for a win, and the stats will show that, and if you can’t win make sure you don't get beat.”

  13. Derby on the Rams-pagepublished at 18:02 GMT 8 November 2025

Here's some stats from today's actions from our friends at Opta:

    • Derby County have won each of their last five Championship games; it’s the first time they’ve done so since July 2020.
    • Middlesbrough’s 29 points after 15 league games this season (W8 D5 L2) is their most at this stage of a league campaign since 2015-16 in the Championship (30), finishing second that season to earn promotion to the Premier League.
    • Only Southampton (12) and Wrexham (11) have dropped more points from winning positions than Norwich City in the Championship this season (10), while only Millwall (7) and Wrexham (6) have conceded more goals in the final 10 minutes of games than their five.
    • Since the start of 2022-23, only Joël Piroe (64) and Josh Sargent (60) have more goal involvements in the Championship than Ipswich Town’s Jack Clarke (48 – 31 goals, 17 assists), with 20 of his goals in that time coming on the road, fewer than only Zian Flemming (22).
    • Hull City’s Joe Gelhardt has been involved in seven goals across his past six Championship appearances (5 goals, 2 assists) – only Coventry City’s Brandon Thomas-Asante (8) has more in the competition since the start of October.
    • Swansea City’s Cameron Burgess is the fourth Championship player to score two own goals in a game - since the rebrand in 2004-05 - after Shane Duffy in August 2016, David Stockdale in April 2017 and Liam Kitching in April 2024.

    FT: Stoke 0-1 Coventry

    Coventry

    Media caption,

Coventry City head coach Frank Lampard reflects on the win over Stoke City.

Frank Lampard speaking to BBC CWR:

"It's a great feeling as it's a tough fixture. I thought we dealt with the game brilliantly from start to finish. I felt we thoroughly deserved it against a good team.

"It's an outstanding goal, the skill level, the opportunism of it, not every player can do that. Ephron got what he deserved today.

"The throw is part of our game, it might be a long throw but the skill level of the goal means it is all about what Ephron did.

"It's hard to single out players, I thought as a team, to come away from home while the other team is in a really good moment, we came and dealt with it.

"It's a great win for us going into the break. I was emotional at the end of the game, our fans are amazing. I saw the extra edge in our team today and it makes me happy.

"Its great where we are, but there is so long to go, the distance is not that big. We have to keep the levels high and keep our feet on the ground and not get overly excited.

"We need to make sure we don't think we've cracked it because there is such a long way to go."

  15. Robins 'disappointed with the result, not the performance'published at 17:56 GMT 8 November 2025

    FT: Stoke 0-1 Coventry

    Stoke City

Stoke manager Mark Robins told BBC Radio Stoke:

“I think the manner of the defeat is even more difficult to take. I’m disappointed with the result, I’m not disappointed with the effort we showed – the lads have given everything and we’ve been really competitive.

“I can’t remember any clear-cut chances that they had – there was some good play but they play for corners, long throws and put you under pressure that way. We didn’t mark properly from the long throw and we got punished for it, that’s the disappointment for us.

“In terms of overall play, it was pretty nip and tuck but we had the best chance of the game with Mill (Manhoef) right in front of the goal from a Sorba Thomas cross and we didn’t take it.

“That was huge – had we taken that, it could have been slightly different. I thought one or two were off it today, we didn’t get enough of a spark when we needed that.”

Tractor is fully up and running now! Great win today, helps when a ex-player sticks it in their own net twice. Also good goals from Azon and Clarke. Up the Tractor Boys!

    Alex Avis, Weymouth, Dorset

As a Town fan I feel sorry for Cam Burgess, was sad to see him leave and he would have been desperate for a good game, maybe even a goal against his old side, but 2 OG's. Ouch.

    FT: Hull City 3-2 Portsmouth

    Portsmouth

Portsmouth boss John Mousinho speaking to BBC Radio Solent:

"There was nothing in the game. We switched off completely for the third goal and that’s what lost us the game, the third goal feels like the most frustrating one.

"We worked hard and pressed and looked solid as the game went on but Murph (Josh Murphy) can’t be the only outlet we have, we have to take care of the ball better and have to create more in terms of opportunities and we haven’t been.

"We have to come back after the international break and cut out those errors that have left us in the table where we are."

  18. 'We scored three beautiful goals'published at 17:49 GMT 8 November 2025

    FT: Hull City 3-2 Portsmouth

    Hull City

Hull City head coach Sergej Jakirovic told BBC Radio Humberside:

"I'm very pleased with the performance, we played very well for all 90 minutes.

"We controlled most moments on the pitch and scored three beautiful goals and we put a lot of energy and intensity on the pitch.

"The third goal was outstanding, even the pass from Charlie because they had five behind (the ball), but great timing of the run by Joe Gelhardt, first touch amazing and the second touch, I would say like Denis Bergkamp for Arsenal.

"Enis Destan (was brought in), because we expected a lot of long balls, a lot of air challenges, they tried to press us man to man all over the pitch. When he arrived he was injured, now he's healthy and I'm pleased to give him the chance, and he used his first appearance, first goal, it cannot be better."

  20. 'The way we dug in was sensational'published at 17:43 GMT 8 November 2025

    FT: Blackburn 1-2 Derby

    Derby County

Derby County boss John Eustace told BBC Radio Derby:

"I'm very proud, obviously. I'm delighted with the effort.

"I thought in the first half we were really good and in the second half there was nothing in the game, it was a bit dead, and we gave them something to fight for.

"The way the lads dug in at the end at the back end of a three-game week was sensational."
