Just your typical Saturday afternoon in the world's most engrossing football division.

It's not how you start, it's how you finish, as the old adage goes. Well, Coventry were on course to break every record going in the second tier just two months ago, now they might not even go up. That's how quickly things can turn, and how gruelling a schedule it is.

Middlesbrough have quietly gone about their business while Hull City have flown into the top three under the radar.

At the other end Portsmouth can look forward to brighter days ahead but West Brom, whom they humbled at Fratton Park, are going in the opposite direction at pace.

Thanks for your company today, we'll be back on Tuesday night for another instalment of mayhem, including Portsmouth v Ipswich and Hull City v Watford...

But before that, we will be providing detailed coverage and analysis across the Championship and EFL on Monday's transfer deadline, so see you then!

Preston North End ended a run of three-straight defeats in the league with a point at Ipswich, and boss Paul Heckingbottom told BBC Radio Lancashire:

"The result is a shame, but the performance was good and strong. Sometimes it goes against you. For the majority of the game, I felt we were comfortable, regardless of the players they've got and how well coached they are.

"I felt that we controlled when they had the ball and after the first five minutes we did carry our threat and I felt that threat grew in the game.

"That's the way it goes. You know you're going to have big spells to defend, especially as the game wears on and Kieran is throwing more attacking players on.

"It's frustrating and a shame. I don't think anyone could begrudge us if we'd got the three points there because it was really well done and a big performance, but we didn't manage to do it."

Ipswich Town left it late to grab an equaliser in their 1-1 draw at home with Preston North End this afternoon.

After the match, head coach Kieran McKenna told BBC Radio Suffolk: "It was a tough challenge. They came today with a gameplan, they defended really deep, put an extra body in midfield, which they don't usually do, and they made it really hard for us to break them down.

"We did some good things, we came close a few times but we didn't quite do enough or execute enough. We need to keep working on it.

"We didn't quite manage to counter enough throughout the game. Daniel Jebbison was a big threat with his running and then they scored their goal from a set play which was a bit lucky as well, to be honest, in terms of how it fell, but we didn't defend it well enough.

"After that I thought the reaction from the team and the stadium was really good."

Sheffield United earned a hard-fought point at Millwall and manager Chris Wilder told BBC Radio Sheffield:

“In my opinion, at this particular moment it’s the hardest place [Millwall] to go and get a result.

"I always think you go to the big clubs and the big grounds, no disrespect, with 30 or 40,000 capacity, maybe not that many in, but today it was a full house and they’re flying.

“The way we approached the game, the way we played when we had to and when we dug in, there are so many positives to come from today.

“Ultimately, we’ve not got the result we were after, not for the want of trying. It’s great for the young players, as I talked about before, in terms of the experience in playing here.

“I always enjoy it and believe, as a player and as a team, if you can get a result here, if you can get a win great. If you can get something that’s a sign of strong character mentally and physically from a team point of view.

“I thought we showed so many qualities and attributes today. We can be a little disappointed that we’ve not put them to bed a couple of times, but saying that they get their results for a reason and are in the position they are for a reason.”

    Millwall

    Media caption,

Millwall boss Alex Neil reacts to the 1-1 draw with Sheffield United

Millwall remain fifth in the Championship after a battling draw with Sheffield United and manager Alex Neil told BBC Radio London:

"I thought it was a tight game. I thought it was a good game. I thought both teams had their moments.

"I thought it ebbed and flowed, with bits where we were on top and looked likely to score. I thought they then got on top in certain spells in the game. And I always knew it was going to be a tough game.

"Chris’ teams, they’re very similar to us. They roll off the left, hold width on the right, they press the ball, they get after you, and everything, when it drops in the middle, becomes a bit of a fight, a bit of a battle, and you’ve got to make sure you land on second balls.

"I think the only frustrating thing from my point of view is towards the end, with some really good positions that we got into, it’s just maybe that little lack of detail, lack of quality, just to try and finish it off and get the goal that really mattered."

Swansea beat Watford to claim their first away victory of 2026 as they edge closer towards mid-table and boss Vitor Matos said:

"We felt the [away] performances were going in the right direction and the mentality was and is going in the right direction.

"It was a matter of efficiency and detail and today that's what we got. It's a hard place to come. Watford are a really good team and first half they pushed us back which is not normal, but we were able to cope with that.

"Then when we had the chances we were able to score and to keep the clean sheet.

"With the ball in the second half we were able to control more of the game and that gave us the momentum and the chances."

Watford boss Javi Gracia wants to talk to the club's owners to discuss the future of the team as he is disappointed with their current situation, he told BBC 3CR after the 2-0 defeat to Swansea.

"It's a very difficult afternoon. In my opinion we were better in the first 45 minutes but after the goal we were not able to compete well.

"We are in a very difficult moment. I knew before the game that maybe it could happen. Some players are playing with some discomfort.

"The last results speak about the team now. There are some moments when we compete well but we have not enough consistency to get the results we want.

"I am really disappointed and want to speak to the owner and know how they feel in this moment.

"I am really disappointed with the level of the team, the situation of the team and maybe the future of the team is something I want to know and speak about."

After picking up just a fourth away win of the season at Oxford, Birmingham boss Chris Davies told BBC WM:

"Obviously. I’m really pleased with the win, but I was thinking before the game that I wanted us to play well, I wanted us to have that level of control in the match.

"I emphasised that during the week and I think you could see that today. There was a good calmness and a good patience to our game. I think we had a good balance to our possession and that gave us a level of control, which I think was massive in winning the match.

"This calendar year we’ve looked more of a team. That’s the first thing I’ve been emphasising to the players – you’ve got to be a team, you’ve got to work hard for each other and that gives you a chance of winning games in this league. We’ve looked like that in the last few games.

"Away from home was the question mark, but we’ve gone and done that. Here again, another clean sheet and a couple of goals and that’s really good for the confidence."

Oxford United manager Matt Bloomfield suffered his first defeat in his fourth game in charge of the U's, going down to a 2-0 defeat to Birmingham City this afternoon.

After the match, he told BBC Radio Oxford: "I always try and speak as honestly as I can after games and last week we were worthy winners, but today it wasn’t to be.

"Our levels weren’t quite at the level required to win the game, playing against incredibly good opposition, who’ve spent so much money on their squad. Our intensity needed to be at the top and we just didn’t quite get there today.

"For their second goal, we were actually in possession, we’re breaking out, we gave the ball away and the next thing you know, it’s in the back of our net. Two-nil put a bit of a pin in us because I felt we were starting to build a bit of momentum.

"It’s a deeply frustrating end, but we don’t get too low. It’s the first defeat, there’s going to be a rollercoaster between now and the end of the season and we have to make sure that every day we come in ready to work and we keep moving forward."

Hull City moved up to third in the Championship after Lewis Koumas scored on his debut to secure a vital win in a largely scrappy game at Blackburn.

Tigers head coach Sergej Jakirovic told BBC Radio Humberside:

"I think this is our biggest advantage, that we can play good on the ball even when we are bad on the ball.

"Like today, we were not good on the ball. But this is also a very demanding, tough pitch. It's not easy and Blackburn are fighting for every point.

"But we now have stability and have found balance in our team tactically.

"We defended the box very well because Blackburn are first in the league for number of crosses inside, which was very important. Maybe some decisions in the last third we could have found better options.

"But this is how players see the situation, and I don't have a joystick there. Today we had stability, balance and mostly control. Sometimes they had some good chances, but we did too.

"We used our chance after we took the ball in midfield, a very quick counter-attack and a nice technical performance, and Koumas scored the goal.

"This is football and, in the end, when somebody asks how you played, we won 1-0 and that is the most important thing."

    Media caption,

Blackburn are three points from safety in the Championship after a 1-0 defeat by Hull

Blackburn Rovers remain in the bottom three after a 1-0 defeat to Hull and head coach Valerien Ismael told BBC Radio Lancashire:

“I think it's not about the performance today, it's not about the desire or the mentality. What we have to complain about is take our chances, it's as simple as that.

"At some point, you have to take your chances when you dominate the game like this. You're on the front foot, on top of the opposition, and you have to get the reward and make sure you score a goal.

"I think it will help us and all of a sudden, in the second half from nothing, we concede that goal and after that late in the game, it's tough for the players because, as I said, they try to give everything in the game.

"The power is there. The will is there. So any reason why we're not winning at home, I don't know why it's so complicated this season.

"Now we have to keep that performance and make sure that we take our chance. It will be important for the next game and I think we go from there."

Albion head coach Eric Ramsay reacts following loss at Portsmouth.

West Bromwich Albion's miserable form under new head coach Eric Ramsay continued this afternoon following a comprehensive 3-0 defeat by fellow Championship strugglers Portsmouth.

After the match, Ramsay told BBC Radio WM: "It was tough. We have to own the performance, take accountability and look inward as individuals and as collective. And we have to get better.

"I am concerned we didn’t handle what was an inevitable quick start - a team that really draws on the crowd. We set up in a way trying not to feed that momentum but we did the opposite and it affected the players and we need to deal with it better.

"I am disappointed we haven't been able to move the group forward in the short space of time I have been here.

"There were some fundamentals missing for the first half that start to lead to the performance feeling short and that contributes to the levels of confidence.

"We have to address some of the basics in terms of competition of the second balls and that, as we regain possession, we are neat and tidy."

Portsmouth boosted their Championship survival hopes with an impressive 3-0 win over struggling West Bromwich Albion at Fratton Park.

Pompey boss John Mousinho told BBC Radio Solent: "It was the best performance of the season and an important result. I was really impressed with the first half. The second half was a different display but it was really professional.

"From the first minute we pinned them in and won the physical duels.

"The energy and quality was there. And putting those two together is something we have struggled with this season.

"The big thing that has been missing is putting the ball in the back of the net and getting into the final third and creating a bit more.

"But today we were relentless in terms of getting into the final third and creating chances."

After Middlesbrough held on for a 1-0 win at the Riverside, Norwich City head coach Philippe Clement told BBC Radio Norfolk:

"For sure [we deserved something]. Everybody felt that. The Middlesbrough crowd was really nervous because they saw there was a competitive team against them.

"They've seen a lot of games this season where their team was so dominant and overflowing opponents. That was not the case today.

"Great credit to my players with what they showed against a team with the best physical data this season, so a lot of positive points to take.

"Of course, I am gutted because I hate to lose, and my players also, but there are different ways to lose.

"This was losing with pride and with honour and giving your all and we were close with Jovon to getting a 1-1."

"The last five minutes of this game were in some ways the ugliest thing I have seen on a football pitch and in some ways the most beautiful thing.

"It was passion, everyone involved. The crowd was unbelievable, the players understood everything in terms of playing the way we needed to play in those five minutes, so I think that was very, very beautiful and something very special.

"It felt like it wasn't our best day with the ball but then how you defend like that in the second half. That is against a team that has done four wins in a row.

"How you defend with that heart and that passion and doing that together and still keeping them away from clear chances - the passion and the energy, that's what I'm going to take away with me. It was unbelievable."

After coming from behind to beat leaders Coventry and avenge a 7-1 away defeat in August, Queens Park Rangers head coach Julian Stephan told BBC Radio London:

"I think it was a great game, a great win. All the credit to the players because I think they played with a lot of ambition today, quality as well.

"I think we had probably three or four good situations in the first half, concede a goal early in the second half with the first situation for them, but the players showed today great character and desire to change the momentum.

"If I have to sum it up it's the situation when we equalised through Richard Kone and how Nico Madsen ran to take the ball and put the ball immediately in the middle.

"It means a lot for me in terms of character and how the players wanted not only a draw, but a win today, and they did everything to have this win, so big credit to the players."

Coventry's once 10-point lead at the top of the Championship has been cut to zero after they let a one-goal lead slip for the second game running to lose at QPR.

Sky Blues boss Frank Lampard told BBC CWR: "We didn't deal with the messy parts of the game well enough, second balls a little bit, a few duels and get punished for it.

"It's a great goal, great header from Josh [Eccles], great ball from Rudy [Rudoni]. The feeling was on this pitch against a difficult opponent it was going to be a tough game and there wasn't much in it before that, so it's a great goal to get us in front and you fancy us a little bit.

"But again when there's mess in games and the second balls and balls dropping and we don't deal with them and they end up going in behind us and we're late on some things, then you get punished for it.

"What we must do now is keep positive, look to the next one. We're in a difficult moment, it's clear, a difficult moment and we're top of the league.

"We know that gap's gone now, so it's a race from now and we have to pick ourselves up very quickly."
