George Earthy scored the only goal of the game as West Ham United's under-21's beat League Two Colchester United to reach the last 16 of the EFL Trophy.

The Hammers' are the only one of the young Premier League outfits to reach the third round of the competition this season.

Earthy, who spent last season on loan with Bristol City in the Championship, scored the only goal of the game with a crisp strike.

The U's had a great chance to level in time added on at the end of the match but Finlay Herrick made a fine save to keep out Micah Mbick's penalty and the on-loan Charlton man could not convert on the rebound.

West Ham will now face League One AFC Wimbledon in the last 16 on Tuesday, 13 January.
