Newcastle winger Harvey Barnes has also been called up to Thomas Tuchel's England squad to replace injured Arsenal midfielder Eberechi Eze.

Eze was not in Arsenal's squad for Sunday's 2-0 Carabao Cup final defeat by Manchester City because of a lower leg injury.

Barnes has been called up once before, in October 2020, when he won his only England cap in a friendly against Wales.

Scotland had tried to convince Barnes to switch his international allegiances and play for Steve Clarke's team at this summer's World Cup, with the 28-year-old eligible through his grandparents.

But Barnes turned down Scotland's advances and he has now been called up to Tuchel's squad for friendles against Uruguay and Japan in which a number of fringe players will be given chances to stake a claim for a regular place.

The Three Lions face Uruguay on 27 March and Japan on 31 March, with both games at Wembley Stadium.

Barnes has scored 14 goals in all competitions for Newcastle this season.

Sir Gareth Southgate, when he was the England manager, said the "door was wide open" for Ben White to return two years ago when he was selecting his squad for the Euro 2024 warm-up friendlies.

"[White] would be in this squad but he's not available to us and I have to focus on who can help us," he said at the time.

"Clearly on form. I can't sit here and say he doesn't deserve to be in.

"It is a great shame. He is a player we took to the Euros, a player we took to the World Cup and I spoke to him post-Qatar because I wanted to pick him.

"People have given me a lot of stick for not picking players in the past who haven't made themselves available. But I've always been able to keep them out of that story.

"On this occasion, because of the circumstances around the number of injuries and his decision to come off the long list I've got to be more transparent."

Asked whether White was suggesting he would not play for England while Southgate was the manager, the Three Lions boss said: "I don't know the answer to that. I hope that's not the reason."

Ben White started Arsenal's Carabao Cup final defeat by Manchester City last night.

But he has struggled to earn regular minutes in the Premier League this season, playing in only seven league matches, starting four of them.

The 28-year-old defender has four international caps for England and last played an international game back in March, 2022.

That makes his inclusion in Thomas Tuchel's Three Lions squad with the World Cup just on the horizon all the more surprising.

White made his England debut under Gareth Southgate in a friendly against Austria in June 2021.

Capable of operating as a central defender and as a full-back, White was part of the England squad at the 2022 World Cup but did not add to his four caps in Qatar.

He was an unused substitute in group games against Iran and United States and has not been part of an England camp since flying home early from the Qatar World Cup for personal reasons.

Former England manager Sir Gareth Southgate said that he had "no issue" with Ben White after the Arsenal defender made himself unavailable for selection for warm-up friendlies against Brazil and Belgium in March, 2024.

At the time, Southgate said Arsenal sporting director Edu told him that White did not want to be considered.

"I spoke to him post-Qatar and there was reticence from his side. I don't know why that is," said Southgate.

White left England's World Cup squad in Qatar for personal reasons, with reports saying he was unhappy and had fallen out with assistant coach Steve Holland.

"There is no issue between us at all and there's also no issue with Steve, which has been mentioned in articles and I don't like that," said Southgate.

"I have to accept things are false about me, but I'm not prepared for that to happen to my coaching team. That is not the reason Ben is not with us."

The 26-year-old has not been selected for England since the 2022 World Cup until now, with Thomas Tuchel now in charge.

His last appearance for England was in a 3-0 friendly win over Ivory Coast on 29 March, 2022.

But he is now...Arsenal's Ben White has been added to Thomas Tuchel's England squad for the Three Lions' March fixtures.

He has four caps to his name.

Before Arsenal next play, their international contingent have some matches to keep them entertained.

A lack of creativity in the midfield also compounded Arsenal's problems in the Carabao Cup final.

With Martin Odegaard and Eberechi Eze out injured, they already had an uphill task against Manchester City.

Odegaard's knee injury had robbed Arsenal of their primary source of midfield invention.

In his absence, Eze had hit a strong run of form recently, scoring in the Champions League last-16 second leg against Bayer Leverkusen and starting in four consecutive Premier League fixtures.

With the former Crystal Palace forward also picking up an injury before the final, Arteta had to turn to Kai Havertz, who played in the number 10 role but with minimal influence on the game.

Havertz did not create a single chance in 66 minutes on the field and won only one of the 10 duels he was involved in.

Without a natural playmaker to orchestrate their attacks, Arsenal were largely predictable and created very little threat when they needed it the most - as an xG of 0.17 in the second half showed.

Arsenal have a nine-point lead over Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table and will be hoping to extend that gap to lift the trophy at the end of the season.

Mikel Arteta's side have 70 points after winning 21 of the 31 matches they have played.

City are on 61 points after winning 18 of the 30 matches they have played.

Pep Guardiola's side have a game in hand in the league because their fixture against Crystal Palace, which was due to be played over the Carabao Cup final weekend, is still to be re-scheduled.

The two sides face each other again in the league at Etihad Stadium on Sunday, 19 April.

The reverse fixture at Emirates Stadium, back in September, finished 1-1.

If Arsenal won, that would have quickly put Manchester City to bed, now, the pressure will ramp up just that extra little bit.

There is a bit of a break now, with the international games, which will provide Arsenal with a little bit of thinking time.

They are the favourites [for the Premier League title], and rightly so, and I still think they will win it, but it just changes the dynamic.

For a team that hasn’t gotten across the line it asks the question and with a team like Manchester City coming for you, that is the last thing you want.

Arsenal started pretty well but you have to take those chances.

We couldn't get out of our own half. Man City have got to get the credit. What they've shown in the final is what they're capable of doing. They win games.

Arsenal's project is about them trying to win the league. It's a different team that's going out there [in the league]. The mentality has got to be better than it was today.

Manchester City made a shaky start to the Carabao Cup final against Arsenal and needed their goalkeeper James Trafford to bail them out early.

Three saves to deny Kai Havertz and Bukayo Saka in the early stages kept the score level before City found a foothold as the game progressed.

But it was in the second half that City shifted into a higher gear and took full control of the contest.

After the break, Pep Guardiola's side overloaded Arsenal's left defensive channel where Piero Hincapie was already on a yellow card and struggling to deal with the threat of Antoine Semenyo.

That opened up the right side for City’s creators - including Rayan Cherki, Matheus Nunes and Semenyo - to combine and push the Arsenal defence onto the back foot.

Both of Nico O'Reilly's goals came from moves that originated on that flank, with Semenyo creating the first and Nunes grabbing the assist for the second.

By the final whistle, City resembled the seasoned, trophy‑hardened side they so often have been under Guardiola in the past.

They might not yet have the consistency of the side that won a historic four Premier League titles in succession, but when they get it right they are a match for anyone, as they proved here.
