Sheffield United midfielder Djibril Soumare (number 18) puts the ball into his own net to hand Norwich a point

A Djibril Soumare own goal gave struggling Norwich a share of the points at in-form Sheffield United.

Both sides had chances in the first half but while Danny Ings was perfectly placed to head Josh Sargent's acrobatic effort off the line at one end, the former England international headed wastefully over from a corner at the other.

The home side, who made eight changes from the 4-0 win over Stoke because of injuries and illness, took the lead when Ings tapped in from a couple of yards out from Tahith Chong low ball into the box.

The Canaries levelled when the hosts made a mess of clearing their lines and Jovon Makama drilled a low ball across goal that Soumare bundled into his own net.

Amankwah Forson had a great chance to win it for Philippe Clement's men in time added-on after running free from his own half but Michael Cooper made a fine low save.

The point does little to help Norwich's plight at the wrong end of the table and they remain five points adrift of safety.

The Blades would have moved to six points off the play-off places with a fifth successive win but the draw leaves them in 17th place.

Ings ends long wait but Blades have to settle for point

Sheffield United came into Tuesday's match off the back of four straights wins where they had scored three or more goals in each game.

Boss Chris Wilder gave midfielder Oli Arblaster his first appearance since rupturing his ACL against Sheffield Wednesday in November 2024 - one of eight alterations.

It was another of his many changes, striker Ings, who was at the centre of much of the game's pivotal moments though.

The former Southampton man headed an effort from Sargent, who limped off before the break, off the line with keeper Cooper beaten to keep the scores level only to somehow head over the bar at other end when Harrison Burrows corner found him totally unmarked at the back post.

Ings did finally end his near 15-month goal drought after the break when he tapped in Chong's low ball after good play down the Blades' right.

Norwich have lost a division joint-high 12 games this campaign but they avoided a 13th thanks to Soumare's own goal after some dreadful defensive play from the home side.

Forson could and maybe should have won it when he streaked clear in the final moments with the hosts pushing up for a winner but Cooper's fingertips kept it out.

What's next?

The Blades are in action for a third time in a week when they travel to out-of-form West Bromwich Albion on Friday.

Norwich face a tough task against another one of the division's improving sides when they welcome Southampton on Saturday.

Wilder disappointed with 'scruffy' Norwich goal - Sheffield United reaction

Wilder: 'Didn't deserve more than a point'

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder told BBC Radio Sheffield:

"I don't think we deserved anything more than a point.

"I'm at the coalface and I know that players can't play Tuesday and Friday, especially players coming back from injuries.

"It's possibly one of the hardest games we've had to deal with for a while.

"It's the third or fourth time we've had three games in six days so every single one of the decisions we made were physical decisions.

"I'm disappointed in the manner of their goal because it's so scruffy. Midfield players out of position, opportunity to clear it, we don't and then bundle it into the back of our net. It's a really poor goal."

We should have won - Norwich City reaction

Clement: 'I'm not a doctor'

Norwich City boss Philippe Clement told BBC Radio Norfolk:

"I think we should have won the game. If you are alone in front of the goalkeeper in the last 10 minutes you need to kill it off and you have a victory.

"You have games where the opponent is better and you struggle and fight and you get a point and yet you are very satisfied. It was not that kind of game.

"I would not say it is two lost points because I am proud of what the players brought but it could have been better.

"I think four or five weeks ago they would have lost this game with losing important players and going behind."
