Leeds are through to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup for the first time in over two decades after they comfortably beat Championship side Norwich at Elland Road.

The Premier League side never looked like being on the end of an upset and deservedly took the lead midway through the first half when Sean Longstaff superbly volleyed home after expertly controlling Gabriel Gudmundsson's cross.

Gudmundsson then got his first goal for the club just before half-time, prodding in after the Norwich defence failed to deal with Dan James' cross.

Norwich struggled to create much against their higher division opponents in the first half, taking until 10 minutes before half-time to have an attempt on goal when Ali Ahmed dragged a low shot wide.

But they improved after the break as Lucas Perri was tested for the first time just over 10 minutes into the second half, keeping out Kenny McLean's long-range effort.

Norwich had a golden chance to get a goal back when substitute Errol Mundle-Smith found Anis Ben Slimane with great ball across the face of goal, but the latter sent his shot onto the outside of the post.

Norwich goalkeeper Vladan Kovacevic, on as a half-time substitute for the injured Daniel Grimshaw, made two good saves but could not prevent Leeds adding a third when Dutch forward Joel Piroe curled home a superb left-footed effort with five minutes left.

The last time Leeds reached the FA Cup quarter-finals was in 2002-03, having been knocked out in the fifth round on four occasions since then.

Leeds have now progressed from each of their past seven FA Cup ties against sides from a lower division

This was a welcome result for Leeds after they had suffered a disappointing home loss to Sunderland in the Premier League in midweek.

That defeat, coupled with results elsewhere, has dragged them back into the relegation battle, having looked like they were pulling clear of trouble in recent weeks.

Perhaps more disappointing than the result against the Black Cats was the performance as Leeds struggled to create many meaningful chances.

Boss Daniel Farke, who had to watch this game against his former side from the stands as he served a one-match touchline ban, rang the changes with just two players from the Sunderland game retaining their place in the side.

But those who came in produced an encouraging display as Leeds outclassed a Norwich side that has been impressive under Philippe Clement, having won nine of their 11 games in all competitions prior to the trip to Elland Road.

The result will give Leeds both the encouragement that they have the strength in depth to pull away from danger in the Premier League as well as enjoy an FA Cup run that has been long overdue at the club.

What next for these teams?

Leeds will find out their quarter-final opponents in Monday's draw, which takes place before West Ham host Brentford at 19:30 GMT.

Farke's side will then switch their focus back to Premier League survival next as they travel to Crystal Palace on Sunday, 15 March (14:00 GMT).

Norwich, meanwhile, host Sheffield United in the Championship on Wednesday, 11 March (19:45 GMT).
