  3. 'She feels like she let her team down'published at 21:32 GMT 21 January

    FT: Arsenal 0-1 Manchester United

    Arsenal

Arsenal manager Renee Slegers on Olivia Smith's sending off: "I just saw her briefly, she is gutted. She feels like she let her team down. We will pick her up tomorrow, it's a tough learning for her and the team.

"I'm not sure the first yellow was a yellow, I can understand the second one. She plays with dynamism and on the edge, she is still young. We are here to support her.

"The way we handled the 10 v 11 situation was really good and the players gave everything. The fans helped too, so thank you to them."

    FT: Arsenal 0-1 Manchester United

    Arsenal

A very disappointing night for Arsenal when all is said and done.

They huffed and puffed but only tested United keeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce on a handful of occasions, and lacked sufficient quality to beat her.

21 shots, just three on target.

Then to top it off, a red card for Olivia Smith, who had been their main creator up until being sent off on the hour. She'll now be absent for that huge game against Chelsea in the WSL on Saturday.

It was more a step backwards than the step forwards Renee Slegers had asked for pre-match.

That Arsenal performance looked like a squad desperate for a rebuild. Our veteran players have done us proud but they couldn't maintain those levels forever. A realistic goal should probably be a CL qualification spot in the WSL and then start next season fresh.

  6. 'We deserved a better result'published at 21:26 GMT 21 January

    FT: Man City 0-1 Chelsea

    Manchester City

Man City boss Andree Jeglertz speaking at full-time:

"Of course, we're extremely disappointed. I think that we deserved a better result and I think that's a little bit of a conclusion. When we look at it afterwards with the players we should be so proud of the performance because we created enough chances to win the game and we did a very good game in general.

"We don't have the small details with us, but hopefully we will have that in 10 days when we play them again. Disappointed but proud of the players.

"We are pretty convinced that in 10 days it will be another opportunity for a new game.

"I'm not worried at all because the players are very disappointed, but at the same time they feel that with how we are playing at the moment is on a very high level. I'm pretty sure when we play London Lionesses on Sunday the players will be 100% fit and ready to continue our WSL games."

  8. 'People don't understand how hard the players work'published at 21:17 GMT 21 January

    FT: Man City 0-1 Chelsea

    Chelsea

Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor speaking at full-time: "It never gets boring and it's a really good habit [reaching finals]. I think I am really proud of my players to come here and keep clean sheets against this team with so much talent, it was a great performance.

"In some part of the game we got a bit lucky, but to be able to win 1-0 and qualify for the final, it was a great performance.

"We were a bit lucky, we conceded two posts, in some games it goes that way and it's a good thing for us tonight. Most of the game we were strong defensively, we showed resilience as a team. I'm really pleased becase probably a lot of people were expecting different result because of the form City were in.

"The most difficult thing is to keep performing at the highest level and keep winning games. To be in another final is a new opportunity for us to grab a title. People don't realise how much it takes from the players. Chelsea has been doing this for years, but I'm happy because I'm the new manager and they keep doing that. People need to understand it takes a lot, the players are working really hard, it's a mentality to be able to achieve that."

  9. 'We weren't clinical enough'published at 21:13 GMT 21 January

    FT: Man City 0-1 Chelsea

    Manchester City

Man City forward Lauren Hemp speaking at full-time:

"It's very frustrating. I thought we were the better team, created a lot of chances, kept the ball well but we weren't clinical enough and that cost us the game.

"I'm so proud of the team, we put in a great performance. There are fine details we didn't get right. It's hard, because we haven't lost in a while. We will take the positives and take that into the weekend.

"Against a team like that we need to put away some chances. They are a top team, they scored a good goal, but it could have been stopped. We'll come back stronger, we know what it takes to win. We played some really good stuff tonight.

"I though we were great in both halves, the defence did really well and stopped them progressing forwards.

"Now we have to focus on the league where we are in a great position. I'm really excited to play against Chelsea again."

City fans sing: "We are top of the league" but it won't make a dent with the Chelsea supporters on the far side celebrating their victory. A decent number have travelled up from London.

  11. 'Another opportunity to win something'published at 21:07 GMT 21 January

    FT: Arsenal 0-1 Manchester United

    Manchester United

Manchester United captain Maya Le Tissier, speaking at full-time about how she feels about making the final: "Great. It was hard-fought out there. Such a scrappy game. It wasn't the prettiest game but glad to get the win and get through to the final."

On playing the final against Chelsea: "It will be cool. Obviously, we've not made the final before. It's another opportunity to win something and that's what we want to do. We want to be challenging in every cup we're in.

"It's a massive team effort from players and staff to get ready for the next game but we've done it many a time this season so we're ready for that."

It's a scene of contrasting emotions at Meadow Park, as the home fans have hushed to a murmur and the away end is bouncing with delight.

Arsenal have been knocked out of the League Cup on home soil for just the third time. Before tonight they had won 29 of their 33 home games in the competition.

United battled hard tonight, got their noses in front in slightly fortuitous circumstances, and then dug deep to shut out the hosts.

A great away performance that is deserving of a place in the final.

Chelsea midfielder Wieke Kaptein at full-time:

"Second half we lost control a bit, but we are Chelsea - we are always fighting.

"We kept together as a team, but I think the second half can be better. We won and that's the most important thing."

City's players are understandably crestfallen, but they can't let this affect them too much.

This was it. It's a wonderful ball in. Lauren Hemp steps towards the ball and can't get a solid contact on it.

Surely that would've beaten Hannah Hampton.
