Chelsea rue missed chances in draw with Barcelona

At a glance

  • Ellie Carpenter rifles Chelsea ahead in 16th minute with stunning strike

  • Barca equalise eight minutes later through Ewa Pajor after Chelsea fail to clear a corner

  • Both sides have goals ruled out for offside - and both remain unbeaten in this season's Champions League

Chelsea drew with European giants Barcelona in a pulsating encounter at Stamford Bridge as both sides maintained their unbeaten records in the Champions League league phase.

Full-back Ellie Carpenter put Chelsea 1-0 up when she unleashed a ferocious strike into the far corner after 16 minutes.

Carpenter's goal capped off a strong start for the hosts - but Barcelona responded well and equalised through Ewa Pajor eight minutes later.

The hosts failed to clear a corner and the ball fell kindly for Pajor who thumped a strike into the net from inside the six-yard area.

The Poland international had earlier had a goal disallowed for offside - but Chelsea had also come close through Aggie Beever-Jones.

Blues substitute Catarina Macario thought she had put the hosts back in front within seconds of coming on in the second half when she nodded in Erin Cuthbert's free-kick at the back post, but her effort was ruled out for a marginal offside.

Then the impressive Carpenter had a golden opportunity to score the winner late on but, after a cool one-two with striker Macario, she blasted the ball wide from close range.

USA centre-back Naomi Girma put in a monumental display, making several key blocks to keep Barcelona at bay in her best individual performance for Chelsea.

But the hosts' lack of ruthlessness cost them as Wieke Kaptein also hit a post and Sandy Baltimore fired a shot straight at goalkeeper Cata Coll.

The result keeps both sides in the hunt for automatic qualification, although Chelsea will not want to drop any points in their final two league phase matches against Roma and Wolfsburg.

The top four from the 18 sides in the league phase go straight through to the quarter-finals, with the bottom six teams eliminated - and fifth to 12th progressing to the play-off round.

Chelsea analysis: Blues go toe-to-toe with Barca

'World-class' Carpenter goal puts Chelsea ahead against Barcelona

Having lost 8-2 on aggregate to Barca in last season's semi-finals, Chelsea wanted to put down a marker and get revenge on their European nemesis.

These two sides have produced some great games over recent seasons - but most of them have gone in Barcelona's favour and Chelsea have suffered plenty of heartache at the Catalans' expense.

Keen to turn that around and knowing victory would have been a major boost to their hopes of automatic qualification, Chelsea started with intensity and moved the ball around confidently.

They used the pace of their attacking talents Alyssa Thompson and Beever-Jones effectively, turning the game into a transitional one when they could and causing Barcelona problems.

Chelsea's press was effective too and although Barca's quality was too good on occasions, allowing them to escape it, Blues boss Sonia Bompastor would have been pleased at half-time.

Her side went toe-to-toe with Barcelona - and the only opportunity to take a breath came when a technical fault paused play for eight minutes as the referee's communication lines were down and broadcast feeds across Uefa, Disney+ and the BBC were temporarily affected.

However, for all Chelsea's creativity and positivity, they were only ahead for eight minutes when Pajor pounced to equalise after Carpenter's rocket of an opener.

With little separating the two teams, the hosts' lack of clinical edge was apparent in the second half when Carpenter had the game's best chance but wasted a clever backheel from Macario with the teams locked at 1-1.

Chelsea have often struggled to impose themselves on Barcelona, relying on counter-attacks and direct play to get at the Spanish side, but this was a game in which they went at their rivals and found some success.

That should build confidence for the rest of the season as Chelsea have ground to make up in the Women's Super League title race and still have work to do to book their spot in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Barcelona analysis: Barca remain on track despite tough test

Ewa Pajor equalises for Barcelona

Barcelona have come to expect hostility in London as their rivalry with Chelsea has developed over recent years and they have been the team to end the Blues' hopes of European glory.

Defeat by Chelsea's London rivals Arsenal in last year's final has not been forgotten in Spain and Barcelona were desperate to bounce back this season - recording three wins from three in the league phase before Thursday's game.

They were without key midfielder Patri Guijarro through injury but the one change to the side from their 4-0 victory over Real Madrid in the weekend's El Clasico was the return of three-time Ballon d'Or winner Aitana Bonmati.

Barcelona took a few minutes to settle but when the visitors found their feet they were able to trouble the Chelsea defence through Caroline Graham Hansen and Pajor.

However, Chelsea centre-back Girma was at her brilliant best, blocking a close-range effort from Graham Hansen and keeping Pajor under wraps for most of the match.

This was an elite contest between two teams who will be hoping to go all the way in the competition - but Barcelona will know they have another level they can reach.

They remain unbeaten in Europe this season and will go into their final league phase matches against Benfica and Paris FC favoured to secure maximum points and rubber-stamp automatic qualification.
