Philogene & Greaves goals see Ipswich past Blackpool
Jaden Philogene's exquisite first-half strike helped Championship promotion hopefuls Ipswich Town to victory over League One side Blackpool in the FA Cup third round.
Philogene curled home a delightful first-time effort from Ben Johnson's pass to ensure an interval lead after a one-sided first half.
Town, who made seven changes from their last league fixture, continued to dominate a team 39 places below them in the football pyramid.
But the 1978 FA Cup winners were unable to add to their lead until Jacob Greaves headed in a late goal from a corner.
That took Town into the fourth round for the fourth consecutive season, with Ashley Fletcher's injury-time penalty proving to be a minor consolation for Blackpool.
Ipswich, who finished with 31 attempts on goal and almost 71% possession, set the tone early on, with Seasiders keeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell having to make a decent save to deny Cedric Kipre, while Chuba Akpom and Jack Taylor both headed over from close range.
The visitors, 18th in League One, did threaten when Greaves blocked Danny Imray's shot, but Philogene's sweet strike rewarded Ipswich's control on 35 minutes and Akpom almost made it 2-0 just before the half-time whistle.
A rare Blackpool attack ended with home keeper Alex Palmer diving to his left to keep out CJ Hamilton's 51st-minute shot - their first on target.
The away threat remained limited, however, and Taylor was among those to waste more Ipswich chances to add to the goal tally before Greaves headed in the second.
And although there was still time for Fletcher to score a controversial 96th-minute spot-kick after Scott Banks was brought down by Greaves, the goal did not end up affecting the outcome.
'A huge gap' - reaction
Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna told BBC Radio Suffolk:
"We scored a really good first goal and we could have done better to get a second goal quicker.
"We moved the ball really, really well and got into great positions. We are still working to find the last little bit in some of these games and it took longer to get the second goal than we wanted, but we got it from a set play and then it was a job done.
"The referee has decided to make it interesting, giving them a penalty that wasn't a penalty, in the 94th minute. That made it a bit tighter but we should have killed the game off a bit earlier.
"Credit to Blackpool, they kept going and did some good things in the game, but we did as well.
"We want to go deep in the FA Cup and look forward to the draw. It would be nice to play a Premier League team, but the league is the priority."
Blackpool manager Ian Evatt told BBC Radio Lancashire:
"I'm disappointed to be out but not disheartened. I thought there was a lot to like about what we did.
"It's a great experience for us to come here and do something different – we had to play more of a block and frustrate them and wait for transitions and I thought we did that really well.
"We switched off probably once in the first half and got punished - that's what you get against quality players. It's a huge gap. This is a Premier League team with a Premier League coach.
"We had chances. At 1-0 CJ Hamilton has a chance, Ashley Fletcher had a big chance deflected wide, and we didn't take those moments when we needed to."
