Femi Azeez scored his fifth goal in his past six appearances for Millwall

Femi Azeez broke Sheffield Wednesday's stubborn resistance at The Den to reignite Millwall's Championship promotion charge.

Millwall had taken just two points from their previous four league games and rock-bottom Wednesday frustrated them before substitute Azeez made the breakthrough with his fifth goal in his past six appearances.

Alex Neil's Lions have jumped to fourth in the table and their unlikely promotion bid is back on track.

Wednesday, who are now a daunting 20 points from safety, hit the woodwork through Charlie McNeill and Jamal Lowe.

Wednesday were transformed from the side who surrendered so meekly in Sunday's Steel City derby humiliation by Sheffield United at Hillsborough.

Barry Bannan had a left-footed curler saved by Max Crocombe before Millwall's Kiwi goalkeeper produced a fine fingertip stop to touch away Bailey Cadamarteri's 20-yard effort.

Yan Valery blazed over when he should have hit the target before Crocombe backpedalled furiously to touch away Bannan's outrageous shot from just outside the centre circle.

Millwall struggled to get out of first gear and Caleb Taylor headed wide at the back post before Thierno Ballo was thwarted by Ethan Horvath.

Millwall had a let-off when McNeill thundered a shot against the underside of the bar and they took full advantage, turning the screw on Wednesday as Camiel Neghli and Luke Cundle went close before Azeez had a header saved.

Their sustained pressure told in the 71st minute when Alfie Doughty crossed for Azeez to head home from five yards out, 10 minutes after coming on.

Even then, Wednesday might have grabbed a point and substitute Lowe's 20-yard effort hit the outside of the post.

Neil praises 'professional performance' - reaction

Millwall boss Alex Neil told BBC Radio London:

"In the second half, we created a lot of chances. They created one or two themselves, but over the piece I thought we deserved to win.

"These games are not easy, they're a tough team to play against and they play with an element of freedom as they have nothing to lose so we've then got to put a professional performance on and take the game away from them and eventually we did.

"We've won four out of five at home, we're fourth in the table with an injury list as long as my arm since the start of the season and it's just continued, so for the lads to be where they are, they deserve a huge amount of credit for that."

Sheffield Wednesday boss Henrik Pedersen told BBC Radio Sheffield:

"The boys are back again. We saw our boys with a big, big heart, fantastic mentality and a good togetherness. We worked really hard against a very good and strong opponent.

"We had big chances at important moments. We have to be better to score when we get the chances and we are working on it, but the fundamentals to win football games are a top heart and top togetherness, and the boys showed that in a really good way.

"When we performed like that [Sunday] of course we spoke about it, we had to be honest about it. We had a good meeting and the reaction was good."
