Janina Leitzig saved a stoppage-time penalty as Leicester beat London City Lionesses to claim their first Women's Super League victory in three months.

After a cagey first-half, Shannon O'Brien latched on to Asmita Ale's clever header and scrambled the ball over the line to break the deadlock in the 59th minute.

London City had chances to grab a leveller through Isobel Goodwin, who was denied by the woodwork and a fine stop by Janina Leitzig.

And the Foxes keeper was the hero when she denied Kosovare Asllani from the penalty spot after Janice Cayman clattered into Grace Geyoro in the 96th minute.

Having held off a late surge by the visitors, Leicester clung on to end an eight-match winless run in the league that stretched back to September when they beat Liverpool.

The victory lifted Rick Passmoor's side up to ninth and moved them six points clear of the relegation play-off place.

While Jocelyn Precheur will be disappointed with his side falling to back-to-back defeats, promoted London City enter the winter break in the top half of the table - a comfortable 12 points above bottom club Liverpool.

Analysis: London City rue missed opportunities again

London City were made to rue missed chances and punished for sloppy defending in their 1-0 defeat by Brighton last time out.

It felt like it would be a different story at King Power Stadium, where they looked better defensively but lacked a proper threat going forwards in a dull opening half.

Goodwin was unable to convert half-chances and celebrate her new contract that she signed this week, which will keep her at London City until 2028.

Leicester, too, struggled to create meaningful opportunities, but they unlocked the visitors' backline thanks to a lofted ball over the top by Sam Tierney, with Ale nodding it down into the path of O'Brien.

It wasn't the cleanest of finishes from the 24-year-old, but she held off both Jana Fernandez and Wassa Sangare to bundle in.

However, it looked like O'Brien's determined effort would go to waste when captain Cayman brought down Geyoro in the penalty area with a reckless challenge.

But once again, the Lionesses were left to rue a missed opportunity, with Asllani's poor spot-kick easily stopped by Leitzig.

What's next for these teams?

Both teams will have a four-week break before they're next in action, with Leicester at Tottenham on Sunday, 11 January (12:00 GMT) and London City visiting Liverpool the same day (14:30 GMT).
