Ajax scored a late winner as they came from behind to beat Villarreal and keep alive their hopes of reaching the Champions League play-offs.

The Dutch side lost their opening five matches in Europe this season but have now won back-to-back games to give themselves a chance of finishing inside the top 24.

Villarreal had looked on course to pick up their first win of this Champions League campaign when Tani Oluwaseyi's thumping volley opened the scoring four minutes after the break.

But Oscar Gloukh's free-kick on 61 minutes bypassed everyone and flew into the top corner before Anton Gaaei pulled back for Edvardsen to slot home in the 90th minute.

Ajax now sit in 31st on six points and have a slim chance of reaching the play-offs if they can beat Galatasaray in their final league fixture in Amsterdam next week.

Villarreal sit third in La Liga but have failed to win a game in Europe, picking up just one point in six matches.

They needed to beat Ajax to have any hope of progressing but, while they created chances, a lack of quality in the final third proved costly as Nicholas Pepe and Renato Veiga both had good chances to put them ahead.
