Liverpool's move to sign Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi on transfer deadline day fell through in the final minutes.

A deal was agreed to sell Guehi to the Merseyside club for a fee of £35 million, plus a 10 percent sell-on clause.

The 25-year-old was given permission to complete the formalities of his move, and had started undergoing a medical, in London on Monday, before signing what would have been a five-year contract with the Premier League champions.

Palace were refusing to sanction the transfer as they faced difficulties in sorting a replacement - with target Igor Julio opting for a move to West Ham.

They completed two signings on deadline day.

Toulouse centre-back Jaydee Canvot joined on a four-year deal while Christantus Uche arrived on a seson-long loan from Getafe.

Palace wanted two defensive replacements before sanctioning Guehi's exit.

I can explain how crazy cheap the guehi deal is £20m. Rio Ferdinand cost us United £30m in 2002. I know he only had 6 months left on his contract but I can’t believe there hasn’t been a bidding war

    Alec, Wales

Only £20m for Guehi... What a bargain! Liverpool fans must be fuming. Guess he was just waiting for a bigger club to come in for him.

  7. City beat number several European giants to dealpublished at 15:40 GMT 16 January

Marc Guehi, who has won 26 England caps, was due to be out of contract this summer.

It has been expected he will leave Selhurst Park as a free agent at the end of the season, but City's injury woes appear to have accelerated the deal.

Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Inter Milan and Atletico Madrid are among the European clubs to have shown an interest in signing the defender on a free transfer, with regulations meaning Guehi can sign a pre-agreement with an overseas club from this month.

Guehi came close to joining Liverpool for a fee of £35m last summer, but Palace pulled the plug on the deal during the final hours of deadline day.

The Anfield club remained strongly interested in taking Guehi on a free transfer at the end of the season.

  8. 'As long as I'm enjoying what I'm doing, we'll be successful'published at 15:34 GMT 16 January

    Football Focus

Earlier this month, Oliver Glasner sat down with BBC Football Focus' Kelly Somers to talk about his childhood to retirement.

When asked about his future, the Crystal Palace manager said: "I want to enjoy what I'm doing - that's my biggest goal. Because I know then, as long as I'm enjoying what I'm doing, if I'm enjoying being a manager then I can affect the group I'm working with, I can affect the environment I'm working in and then we will be successful.

"I think I'm always surrounded with great stuff and again, it's not just Oliver Glasner, we need everyone here and a great group of players. Then if we enjoy the time together, we will be successful. This is what I want because for me, it's not saying, 'OK, I want to win the Champions League' but if this year and after I say, it was wasted time, I think it's not worth it. As long as I'm enjoying the journey then I'm really pleased with my life."

The interview is available now on BBC iPlayer and will be shown on BBC One on Saturday, 17 January from 23:55 GMT (01:10 on Sunday in Scotland). Or the interview can be read here in full.

  10. Glasner's frustrations at Palacepublished at 15:26 GMT 16 January

Sunderland v Crystal Palace (Sat, 15:00 GMT)

    Crystal Palace

Oliver Glasner had made his frustrations clear after the club "missed a couple of chances in July and August" to strengthen the squad.

Palace had sold their star man Eberechi Eze to Arsenal for £60m in the summer though failing to reinvest that money in the squad.

It was also reported earlier this season that Glasner had threatened to walk away if captain Marc Guehi was sold to Liverpool on deadline day with a £35m deal collapsing late on.

Glasner publicly dismissed suggestions of a fallout with club chairman Steve Parish, insisting there are "no bad tensions."

Palace are currently 13th in the table with only seven wins in 21 matches and winless in their past six league fixtures.

But, despite this season's struggles, Glasner could now have several suitors in the summer from the Premier League and abroad, having previously won the Europa League with Eintracht Frankfurt.

Manchester United were said to be monitoring him last summer during uncertainty surrounding Ruben Amorim, and a move could be revisited with Michael Carrick signing until the end of the season.

This is the darkest day in palace history!! No other words can describe this feeling !!

    Christian, Tunbridge Wells

Palace in crisis? Glasner off, Guehi off and maybe Mateta too! One regular day of premier league is all I ask for.

    Dan, High Wycombe

The depressing state of modern football. Palace have the greatest moment in their history and the reward is to lose two of their best players and their manager within about six months. So the big clubs can get slightly better. Sigh.

    Matt, Birmingham

Just when I thought Saturday was the worst day in Palace history...

  12. Guehi deal catalyst to Glasner announcementpublished at 15:15 GMT 16 January

    Sami Mokbel
    BBC Sport Senior football correspondent

A deal between the clubs was reached on Thursday night with Glasner updated on developments.

Glasner and Guehi spoke at the club’s training centre in Beckenham, south London, on Friday morning when the player’s intention to join City was confirmed.

And in a dramatic morning at Palace’s HQ, Glasner also confirmed to the squad in a private meeting just before noon his decision to step down as head coach at the end of the season.

BBC Sport understands work on identifying Glasner’s replacement is already underway.

Glasner was keen for Guehi to stay until the end of the season but he has been powerless to prevent Palace from striking a deal with City for the England star.

While Glasner had decided a number of months ago that he would be leaving, the Guehi deal is thought to be the catalyst to him deciding to make his announcement on Friday.

Well, that was quite something wasn't it?

Palace lose most successful manager ever, captain and top scorers at one go. Just like Brentford last summer and they are fifth at present. They have longer to find a replacement manager so just need to get it right.

    Geoff Rhodes, Brighton

For all those Palace fans who think the world has ended, just consider Brentford's position at the end of last season, and where they are now.

    Greg Lamb, Hayling Island

Losing our manager and captain in one day sums up Crystal Palace. He is clearly frustrated by the hierarchy not showing any ambition, and failing to build on the FA Cup victory by investing in the squad. I hope the board are aware of how big a chance we've missed?

As a Liverpool fan I'm fuming if City get Guehi. No idea why our board hasn't gone all out to get him in with the injuries/performances we've had this season. Should've been number one priority!

    Paul, Skipton

Liverpool must be fuming - missed out on Guehi because West Ham beat palace to his replacement, but they haven’t even used him. And now Guehi has gone to one of their biggest rivals instead!

    Dave, The Cotswolds

Annoyed at Liverpool’s owners we had guehi effectively signed in the summer & palace pulled the plug now he’s going to Man City, what are we doing?!

    Stuart, Swindon

Liverpool owners and sports directors have some serious question to ask, very embarrassing to let Guehi go to a rival, guessing we won't sign anyone this window now and just imagine if Van Dijk gets injured now.

"I know that this club is in great hands where everybody wants the best for Palace and yes this is football. Not just today, we sometimes see how the best days - FA Cup final and worst days, Macclesfield is within six months. That is what you have got to deal with in football."

Sunderland v Crystal Palace (Sat, 15:00 GMT)

    Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner on his reasons to leave Palace: "I told Steve and I am looking for a new challenge. That is my feeling after everything. I told him in October.

"It is nothing to do with transfer window. All these rumours, I hate when something is written or talked that is not true - it was very tough for me not to respond.

"I have not talked to any other club. I have no interest. I told the players I would give my best ever season in Crystal Palace history."
