Second-half goals from Khephren Thuram and Weston McKennie confirmed Juventus' progression in the Champions League but left Jose Mourinho's Benfica on the verge of elimination.

After a goalless first half, Thuram, the son of France 1998 World Cup winner Lilian, opened the scoring in the 55th minute with a low strike into the bottom corner after good work from Jonathan David.

David was again involved nine minutes later when he played in McKennie to score Juventus' second goal.

Benfica had chances to pull a goal back but Fredrik Aursnes headed against the post before the visitors were awarded a penalty when Leandro Barreiro was fouled by Gleison Bremer.

But Vangelis Pavlidis slipped when taking the spot-kick and sent it well wide of goal.

With one round of matches left in the league phase, Juventus are 15th and guaranteed at least a two-legged play-off, and have an outside chance of finishing in the top eight, which would take them straight into the last 16.

They are only one point behind eighth-placed Chelsea but Juve would need to get a big win at Monaco next Wednesday and hope other results go their way to avoid the play-offs.

Mourinho won this tournament with Porto and Inter Milan, but his Benfica side are 29th and need to beat one of his former sides, Real Madrid at home, if they are to have any chance of also making the play-offs.
