Scouser here, I genuinely feel more love towards Salah than the likes of McManaman, Carragher, and without a doubt Trent. The only person who compares is Stevie G!

    Stephen Warnock

I know people are saying they’re not getting any money for him, but he was on a £400,000-a-week contract - so by taking that off the books, the club is effectively saving a significant amount.

In a way, that's a financial gain. You could argue that a year ago, the Saudi league might have offered around £100m.

Now, maybe that drops to £40–50m, meaning the club could still have recouped some value.

But it seems this is a mutual decision between Mohamed Salah and Liverpool - that it's better to move on from those wages and reinvest the money elsewhere.

Mohamed Salah leaving Liverpool on a free isn't how many predicted his exit to occur.

And with Trent Alexander-Arnold already having left on a free last summer, there is the potential for a number of others to follow suit.

    • Andy Robertson
    • Ibrahima Konate

    Expires 2027:

Lots of people are calling this a double standard and comparing it to Trent Alexander-Arnold's situation. Trent was a homegrown player who left on a free at 26, right in his prime. Most fans recognise that Mohamed Salah is nearing the end of his career, with his best years likely behind him.

    Richard, Lincolnshire

The difference between Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold is that Salah gave his prime years to the club and leaves as a future Premier League Hall of Famer. Trent could have done the same, but chose to leave for Real Madrid -and now can't even get into the England team.

Salah now looks set to walk out of Anfield as a free agent.

Mohamed Salah is a legend. Trent Alexander-Arnold was just a good player. Salah hasn't spent the last six months learning Spanish while stringing the fans along with talk of being a future captain and loving the club. Plenty of greats have left on free transfers - it's all about how you go about it.

Good riddance!!! He was a one-man demolition squad. As a non-Liverpool supporter, I'm glad Mohamed Salah won't be tormenting defenders in the Premier League anymore. He would glide past defenders and unleash that precision shot - his signature finish, time and time again.

    Naveed, Buckinghamshire

Not a Liverpool fan, but I don't think you can compare Trent Alexander-Arnold - a local lad leaving at his peak - with an ageing player on massive wages who, while still a great player, is clearly in decline now.

When Mohamed Salah signed his new two-year deal with Liverpool, the number two spot of Roger Hunt's looked there for the taking.

But a difficult spell this season, plus the confirmation that he will leave the club in the summer, means Salah will leave the Reds as the club's third all-time top scorer.

FSG have to be trusted on this as we know all great careers at LFC eventually come to an end Keegan, Dalglish to name 2, I'm excited to see who is going to be our next superstar, so thanks Mo and hope you get what you're after.

    Chris, Wirral

To Drew in Perth, I'd have a punt in saying the contract has been cut short due to it simply being expedient for him to move. The added year provided a buffer in case of delays. This will have been planned ahead. He's too important.

Mo is on £20m a year. If his poor form continues in the final year of his contract then that’s poor business. I say this is a good decision by the owners.

  17. 'I don't think it will tarnish his reputation one bit'published at 09:30 GMT

    Stephen Warnock
Former Liverpool defender on BBC Radio 5 Live Breakfast

I think the fans will realise that this has been a really difficult season, not only for him individually but for the team collectively.

I think it just shows you - a little bit of a drop-off in form - how much it affects this Liverpool team and how reliant they've been on him over the last few years.

We don't know what the reason is for the drop- off. Is it the team system? Is it the players, the personnel around him, is it the relationship with the manager? Is it still the hangover of the death of Diogo Jota? We just don't know. It's such a difficult one to put your finger on as to why it has been this way.

I just think Liverpool fans now, knowing that he's leaving, will look at it and think if he can have a great run from now until the end of the season, they can celebrate that. He might be able to win them a couple of trophies or help them win a couple trophies but I don't think it'll tarnish his reputation one bit.

I think if you listen to Liverpool fans talking last night, today, they'll say how much of a great player he is and how lucky they were to see him play.

  18. 'One of the greatest players ever to pull on a red shirt'published at 09:26 GMT

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

There was rejoicing among Liverpool fans when Mohamed Salah signed a new two-year contract in April 2025.

The future seemed set fair. It was, then, a surprise how Salah's form failed him this season, although - like the rest of the club and its supporters - he was left heartbroken by the death of much-loved team-mate Diogo Jota, who was killed in a car crash in July.

Much of Liverpool's grief remained private, so the full toll this took is unknown, but Salah showed his emotions in the opening Premier League game of the season against Bournemouth at Anfield.

Salah used Jota's trademark goal celebration after scoring Liverpool's final goal in a 4-2 win, then was moved to tears in front of the Kop as he applauded fans following the final whistle when they sang the Portuguese's song.

The subsequent decline in his form resulted in him being dropped to the bench for three successive games in six days, leading to his incendiary interview after he sat and watched a 3-3 draw against Leeds United on 6 December.

Salah's public spat with Slot and his denunciation of the club brought the heaviest criticism of his time at Liverpool, but any tarnishing was surely temporary as he was soon rehabilitated - albeit not as the force he once was.

The legacy will always be untarnished and intact.

When the dust settles, no-one could argue against the simple fact that Mohamed Salah has been one of the greatest players ever to pull on a red shirt.

"Your mentality is second to none and a lot of people could take note. You have pushed yourself every single day and always demanded more from yourself and others.
