Ben Stanway's winner sent Partick Thistle into the quarter-finals of the Scottish Cup after a five-goal thriller with Elgin City at Borough Briggs.

Robbie Crawford's opener for the visitors was cancelled out by Ryan Sargent's header as the Elgin forward beat Josh Clarke from close range by getting on the end of a corner to put his side level just before the break.

Just as things looked even between the two sides, Alex Samuel was taken down in the penalty area by Elgin defender Miko Virtanen.

Tony Watt then stepped up to the spot and brought his side in front once again.

Thistle looked eager to add to the scoreline with Aiden Fitzpatrick lashing the ball across the face of the goal on more than one occasion.

It was all about the visitors until Sargent popped up high above the rest to head the fourth-tier side level again.

However, Stanway came to the rescue for the Championship side as Fitzpatrick thumped the ball into Stanway, who drilled it home as the game seemed to be edging towards full time.

What they said

Elgin City manager Allan Hale tells BBC Scotland: "I thought we were excellent in the second half. I thought we scored some really good goals. It's just really disappointing that we lost the game, I thought we deserved to take it to extra-time at least.

"We've had two really good cup runs, and we left everything out on that pitch today. Partick Thistle are a really good team, really good players, but I think we'll get plaudits for playing how we did. I'm really proud of the players today."

Partick Thistle head coach Mark Wilson tells BBC Scotland: "An old-fashioned cup tie, loads of action, but the important thing is that you get through.

"The boys had to show a bit of resilience getting pegged back twice to get themselves back on top, and I'm glad they were able to in the way that they did.

"They never plan out the way you think on paper, where we're going to come up here and win three or four nil. We had to dig in, but the boys rolled up their sleeves and got the job done."
