Derry City suffered a narrow 1-0 loss against reigning champions Shamrock Rovers at Tallaght Stadium.

Dylan Watts' penalty in the 81st minute finally saw Rovers make the breakthrough in a largely low-key encounter.

Derry keeper Eddie Beach denied Jack Byrne and Jake Mulraney but was ultimately beaten by Watts from the spot after Conor Barr's challenge on the lively Adam Brennan.

The result means that Tiernan Lynch's side sit fifth in the Premier Division after five games.

Derry have finished as runners-up to Rovers three times since 2022, but have failed to win at the Dublin venue in the league for over three years.

The Candystripes beat last season's double winners 1-0 in the President's Cup here at the end of January, albeit against a much-changed Rovers XI.

In the first half, there was little by way of goalmouth action, but Beach was forced into a save to deny Byrne after a neat interchange with Graham Burke.

At the other end, Patrick McClean had a snatched effort on goal as Derry sought to grab just their second league win at Tallaght since 2017.

In his 445th game in charge of the Hoops, a record for a Rovers head coach, Stephen Bradley made a triple change just past the midway point in the second half.

Mulraney and Watts were among those introduced, and after the former almost dug out an opener for the Dubliners, Watts was allowed to do just that from 12 yards.

Brennan, a livewire all evening, ran at Barry Cotter relentlessly and teased his replacement, Barr, into a challenge inside the area, leaving referee Kevin O'Sullivan no choice but to point to the spot.

Watts took the responsibility and confidently dispatched his penalty low to the bottom left-hand corner, sending Beach the wrong way to clinch all three points.

Despite defeat to early pacesetters Bohemians last time out, Rovers jump to third, having played a game less than those above them, while Derry slip to fifth.

The Candystripes are next in action at home to Shelbourne this day week.
