Cardiff City goalkeeper Ethan Horvath is close to joining New York Red Bulls in a permanent transfer.

The United States international, 30, is in New York to have a medical and finalise the move.

Horvath, who has not played for Cardiff since their relegation from the Championship last year, was on loan at Sheffield Wednesday earlier this season.

He is keen to play first-team football with a home World Cup this summer and a move back to Major League Soccer would work well for the 10-cap goalkeeper.

"It [the transfer] is not complete but he's in America," Cardiff head coach Brian Barry-Murphy said after the 4-0 win against Barnsley.

Meanwhile, Cardiff centre-back Dylan Lawlor is facing "two or three weeks" out with a knee injury, according to Barry-Murphy.

Wales defender Lawlor damaged his medial ligament while he was warming up before Saturday's 1-1 League One draw at home to Stockport County.

Bluebirds striker Yousef Salech injured his neck during that game, and he received 13 minutes of treatment before leaving the field on a stretcher with his neck in a brace.

Cardiff confirmed that evening that hospital scans showed their top scorer had avoided serious damage, but they are continuing to assess him.

"I think he's just having some further tests. No fractures, no breaks, so that's a big relief," said Barry-Murphy.

"But I don't have any timescale because he's still in some discomfort. So we just have to determine the extent of what's happened to him and assess it on a day-by-day basis."
