Exeter City manager Matt Taylor hailed his resurgent side after they inflicted a first league defeat of the season on Crewe Alexandra.

The Grecians beat the third-placed Railwaymen 2-0 at St James Park to extend their unbeaten run to four League Two games.

Having won just one of their first eight games, Exeter were a point off the relegation places at the end of September.

But 10 points from a possible 12 since the start of October has lifted City to 10th place, a point away from the play-off spots.

"In terms of our ball use first half we were almost electric, weren't we?" Taylor told BBC Radio Devon.

"We looked like we could open the opposition up and get in fantastic attacking areas and positions.

"So we're certainly moving in the right direction, but I think that's a month's worth of work on show again.

"All of a sudden, if you add the Oxford cup game into it, there's a run of four or five fixtures where we've looked connected as a team, we've looked on the same page and we've improved."

Exeter's excellent defensive record was also kept intact in the victory.

The Grecians have now conceded just six goals in 12 League Two matches - a record that allowed them to collect points even when they went on a run of four games without scoring in September.

Only Bradford City have conceded fewer goals in the EFL this season, having let in five in 11 games.

"That's incredible," Taylor said of his side's defensive record.

"I'd like that to look the same at the end of the season.

"But there will be times when an opposition team opens it up, it's a difficult league and we've worked against some fantastic opposition players and it could have been Crewe tonight.

"Going into the game I had a feeling that we were going to play our best attacking game, but it could easily go the other way with how dangerous a team Crewe are.

"Full credit to the group that have withstood it again and they can take a lot of confidence from that."
