Charlton Athletic have signed former England international central defender Conor Coady from fellow Championship club Wrexham on loan until the end of the season.

The 32-year-old moved to the Welsh club in the summer from Leicester City for an undisclosed fee but has failed to establish himself as a regular for Phil Parkinson's side, not starting in the league since a 3-1 defeat by Queens Park Rangers on 13 September.

The former Wolves captain embarks on his eighth different club and is seen as a good fit by Addicks boss Nathan Jones, whose preferred formation so far this season has included three central defenders.

Coady made 10 appearances for the England national side under Gareth Southgate between 2020 and 2022 and scored on his second cap in a 3-0 win over Wales at Wembley.

"We're delighted to add Conor," manager Nathan Jones told the club website., external

"He is a player of immense experience and someone who has played at the highest level and played for his country.

"His leadership and his qualities are something we feel we needed at this time. At this point, we really felt we could utilise his leadership going into the last 18 games."

Born in St Helens, Coady came through the youth ranks at Liverpool and had spells at Sheffield United and Huddersfield before joining Wolves in 2015.

At Molineux, Coady made 317 appearances during seven seasons - becoming the club captain under head coach Nuno Espirito Santo in a side which won the Championship title in 2018 and went on to qualify for the 2019-20 Europa League as Wolves reached the quarter-finals.

Following a year-long loan spell at Everton, Coady left Wolves for Leicester in 2023 but was unable to prevent the Foxes relegation from the Premier League last season.

After a strong start to their first season back in the Championship since 2020, Charlton's recent form has slumped - losing four of their past seven league matches, including last weekend's 4-0 thumping at the hands of South London rivals Millwall - as they have fallen to 19th in the table, sitting three points above the relegation zone.

Coady, who becomes the Addicks' sixth signing of the window, will be available to make his Charlton debut against former club Leicester at the King Power Stadium on Saturday (12:30 GMT).
