Evan Ferguson scored and claimed an assist in a man of the match performance as Roma beat Genoa at the Stadio Olimpico.

The Republic of Ireland striker was on top form throughout for the Giallorossi whose 3-1 win moved them into the Champions League places in Serie A.

Ferguson had been under some pressure with manager Gian Piero Gasperini outlining areas for improvement and the 21-year-old responded with a starring role alongside Paulo Dybala as his side moved to withing three points of leaders Inter.

"It's completely different from English football," Ferguson told Sky Italia after picking up his man-of-the-match award.

"It was a big step for me, but it was an experience I wanted to try, and I'm getting more and more comfortable here."

After Matias Soule had given Roma a 13th-minute lead, Ferguson set up Manu Kone for their second.

The on-loan Brighton attacker put the game beyond reach before the break when following up from a Soule shot to finish the rebound.

Ferguson remained a key figure in the second period before being withdrawn late on before Geonoa claimed a late consolation through Jeff Ekhator.
