Huddersfield Town midfielder Herbie Kane's loan to Plymouth has been cut short by a season-ending hamstring injury.

The 27-year-old moved to the Pilgrims until the end of the current campaign from the Terriers in the January transfer window.

The former Liverpool youngster scored once in eight appearances for the Pilgrims.

"He's been outstanding for us, bringing what we didn't really have, that sort of calmness and possession in midfield," Argyle head coach Tom Cleverley told BBC Radio Devon.

"Unfortunately he's got a significant hamstring tear that will see him go back to Huddersfield and not represent us again this season."

With Bradley Ibrahim and Brendan Wiredu not fit to return for around another two weeks it means few central midfield options for Cleverley.

Either Jamie Paterson or youngster Caleb Roberts are in line to partner ever-present Malachi Boateng in Argyle's midfield for Saturday's Devon derby with Exeter City at Home Park.

"I thought the experience and game management that Pato brings, and technical brilliance, and then Caleb brings the energy, the tenacity, the dynamic sort of midfielder," Cleverley added to BBC Radio Devon.

"He's really benefited from going on loan to Truro and Malachi's the ever present.

"So we're thin in that area of the pitch, but I'm happy with the guys we've got to select from."
