McTominay in race to face Atalanta with Napoli live on BBC

Scott McTominay and Billy Gilmour's chances of a second Italian title in a row could depend on Napoli beating in-form Atalanta on Sunday - and you can watch the action live on the BBC.

Defending champions Napoli head to Bergamo, having fallen 14 points adrift of leaders Internazionale - and four behind AC Milan - and hoping influential midfielder McTominay can return from two games out through injury.

Having picked up an injury in a goalless draw with Como in November, Gilmour made his own first appearance as a 78th-minute substitute in Sunday's 2-2 draw at home to fourth-placed Roma.

But it was McTominay's turn to miss that game - and last Tuesday's penalty shootout defeat following a 1-1 draw at home to Como in the Coppa Italia quarter-finals.

Such is the importance of McTominay - last season's Serie A player of the year and Ballon d'Or nominee - that Napoli have now not won any of the three games he has missed this season, losing two of them.

The 29-year-old told Corriere dello Sport: "I still don't know if I'll play on Sunday. I have a tendon problem that needs to be managed; it's not easy.

"I'm giving it my all to be there. As a player, it's tough to get to the training centre and not be able to train with your team-mates. I desperately want to play, but you have to be sure of my condition."

McTominay, who has 67 Scotland caps, at least seemed to end off-the-field uncertainty about his Napoli future.

His form since a 2024 move from Manchester United has consistently led to speculation about a Premier League return, with his old club and Tottenham Hotspur linked amid suggestions he had found it difficult to settle in Italy.

However, McTominay revealed: "My agent hasn't told me anything about my future. He only talks to the club and me. He has told the Press nothing.

"I'm extremely happy here, I'm a Napoli player and it's all I'm thinking about. I could see myself here for a long time.

"I love this place. Difficulties have been minimal, my family is happy and I'm happy."

Napoli are also reported to be keen to extend the contract of a player who has provided 23 goals and 10 assists in 70 appearances for them.

McTominay has blossomed in the more attacking role handed to him by head coach Antonio Conte.

"At Napoli, I've grown both from a tactical point of view and a physical one," he added. "Tactically, Italy is different from the Premier League. I had to adapt and learn very quickly how to play, what movements to make... how to become a problem in the opponent's area and also how to defend.

"Antonio is a great coach, very strong, passionate, he knows football very well. He is different from anyone else I have had in the past."

He also pointed to Napoli's lengthy injury list as a factor in why they have slipped further behind the leaders in recent weeks but is not giving up on the title just yet.

Should he miss out on Sunday, it will increase the chances of 24-year-old Gilmour making only his seventh start in 14 appearances this season as he looks for game time and to add to his own 43 caps at this summer's World Cup.

With only three wins in 11 outings, nine of them in Serie A, Napoli cannot afford any more slip-ups if they are to retain the Scudetto.

Indeed, Inter's 2-0 win away to Lecce on Saturday heaps more pressure on the Scots' side before facing a tough test against the team that finished third in the standings last season.

Hosts Atalanta were beaten 2-0 away to Borussia Dortmund in the first leg of their Champions League knockout round play-off on Tuesday and lost November's reverse fixture 3-1 in Napoli.

Sunday's opponents also won 3-2 on their last visit in January, with McTominay scoring one of the goals.

However, Raffaele Palladino's seventh-placed side have won three in a row domestically, are unbeaten in eight in Serie A since losing at home to leaders Inter at the end of December, and are only eight points adrift of Napoli.
