What could Swansea do before transfer deadline?

Swansea City head into the final days of the mid-season window with Vitor Matos still waiting for answers regarding the various transfer questions surrounding his squad.

It could be that Swansea do business, with one or even two new faces a possibility, but it may be that there are no further additions following the signings of Joel Ward and Gustavo Nunes earlier this month.

There is also the possibility that players will follow Manuel Benson out of the door – but Matos does not yet know for certain who they will be.

Exits for a handful of fringe figures are being discussed, while it is not inconceivable that one of Swansea's big names will be sold – although it would take a head-turning bid to convince the Championship club to do business.

Matos relaxed as clock ticks down

As the end of his first transfer window as Swansea's head coach approaches, Matos is fairly relaxed.

The mood might have been different but for the Matos-inspired upturn in form which, for the moment at least, has eased relegation concerns.

At the beginning of January the two positions where Swansea were particularly keen for reinforcements were right-back and wing.

Those two boxes have been ticked with the signings of Ward and Nunes, yet that does not mean Swansea have shut up shop.

Matos insists he is "really happy" with the squad at his disposal, yet he has left the door open regarding further signings.

"Transfer windows are always important to balance things, to have more depth in the squad or to improve one or two positions," Matos added.

"At the moment we have signed Joel and Gustavo, who are what I wanted in terms of transfers and the club as well, so let's move on and keep seeing."

Who could Swans bring in?

Assuming no key attacking player departs, the position of most interest to Matos is midfield, and more specifically a midfielder with the ability to operate as a number 10.

After a little over two months at the helm, Swansea's head coach believes a creator behind the forward line would benefit his team.

Finland international Leo Walta, a 22-year-old who plays in the Swedish top flight for Sirius, is among Swansea's potential targets – but there are others in the mix too.

The other possibility is that Swansea will sign a central defender, probably a youngster on loan, as a result of the unexpected loss of Kaelan Casey earlier in the window.

With Ricardo Santos free to leave before Monday's 19:00 GMT deadline, Ben Cabango and Cameron Burgess could soon be Swansea's only senior centre-backs.

Even so, Matos is not desperate for a new face in defence because he feels he has cover options in Ward and on-loan Chelsea youngster Ishe Samuels-Smith.

"Let's see what the market says," Matos said regarding a possible Casey replacement.

"If there's a right one, yeah [it could happen], if there's not, I'm OK with it."

Matos is happy with his options out wide despite the departure of Benson, whose miserable loan spell from Burnley has been cut short, and the news that Zeidane Inoussa will be sidelined for up to three months through injury.

The feeling is that Nunes, who has arrived on loan from Brentford, can compete with Ronald and Eom Jisung for game-time out wide, while there are others who can be pressed into action on the flanks if necessary.

Up front Liam Cullen will provide back-up to leading scorer Zan Vipotnik, while Melker Widell could once again be deployed as a false nine if and when required as Swansea wait for Adam Idah to return after a hamstring problem.

Bobby Wales is Swansea's other option in attack as things stand but they could decide the young Scot's development will be best served by a loan move away for the remainder of this campaign.

As the Championship's leading goalscorer, Zan Vipotnik is sure to be attracting attention from elsewhere - and Matos acknowledges as much.

"I think it's always normal that interest can come, with clubs asking," he said.

"I think that's happens not only with us but with every club, [but there is] nothing that is major to say."

There is a big difference, of course, between clubs making enquiries and deals being struck.

Swansea are under no pressure to sell in this window and there is no suggestion that Vipotnik is pushing through a move.

Nevertheless, Matos accepts there are no guarantees over his key players given that offers could arrive.

"There's so much movement in the market all the time," he said. "You never know with the amount of clubs who have the financial possibilities to come and buy a player, where [a deal] is also a financial advantage for [Swansea]. We never know what can happen.

"What we know is we want to keep the players with us and of course after that we want to add quality, if it's available and if it's the right profile we want."

While some uncertainty remains surrounding Vipotnik, the suggestion is that Swansea would demand a huge fee before agreeing to a sale.

They would also need to find a replacement, which may explain why Birmingham City's Kyogo Furuhashi has been linked with a move to Wales this week.

While the former Celtic frontman has his admirers at Swansea, a deal looks unlikely unless Vipotnik is sold.

Ethan Galbraith is the other Swansea player thought most likely to attract rival interest given his contribution this season but, as things stand, there is no indication that the versatile Northern Ireland international will move in this window.

Swansea expect Galbraith to stay – and the plan is that Vipotnik will stick around too.
