Walsall forward Kemar Roofe says he is "on the right path" to full fitness after making his first start for the Saddlers.

The 32-year-old former Jamaica international has struggled with injuries since being released by Rangers at the end of the 2023-24 season.

He joined Derby as a free agent in February but made just three brief substitute appearances for the Rams last season before he was let go in the summer.

The Saddlers signed him on a short-term deal last month and he made two substitute appearances for the League Two leaders before starting the EFL Trophy win over Stevenage last Tuesday.

He was back on the bench for Sunday's FA Cup tie at National League Gateshead but came on as a 73rd-minute substitute in the 2-0 win.

"It's like a project for myself to keep getting better each day," Roofe told BBC Radio WM.

"I'm excited just thinking about it. I have a vision of where I want to be. I'm not there yet but I'm on the right path to get there."

His deal with his hometown team runs through until January and the former Oxford and Leeds United man has not ruled out extending his stay.

"I'm open to anything," he said. "First and foremost I need to keep building my fitness up and keep helping the team win games."
