Aurora Galli's late penalty rescued a draw for Everton despite a dominant performance by Women's Super League in-form side Tottenham.

Galli converted past Rebecca Spencer in the 85th minute after Heather Payne was knocked to the ground inside the Spurs box.

Tottenham had gone in front after Grace Clinton nodded a deep Drew Spence cross past Courtney Brosnan in the first half.

But Brosnan's goalkeeping performance stopped Spurs extending their advantage, and the visitors managed to salvage a point.

Her heroics also prevented former Toffees player Clinton from finding the back of the net in the second half with a quick save after a goalmouth scramble.

And Everton could have snatched more than a point but Katja Snoeijs had squandered an early chance when she directed a free header into the ground inside the six-yard box.

The draw means Tottenham, who had won three consecutive matches before Sunday, are third in the WSL and miss out on a chance to advance to second.

Everton are ninth after collecting just their fourth point of the season.

Tottenham unable to maintain fine form

Spurs finished just seven points clear of the drop in 2022-23 despite late improvements under interim boss Vicky Jepson.

Their fortunes now bear little resemblance to those before Robert Vilahamn's arrival, and they are eight points off last season's points tally after just five matches.

Tottenham were controlling and limited Everton's opportunities but failed to capitalise on their dominance, with the visitors sitting deep to keep Vilahamn's side at bay.

Jessica Naz couldn't double Spurs' lead when she pulled an effort wide of the far post after coming on as a substitute.

Prolific striker Martha Thomas, who has scored six goals in her five WSL appearances this term, had a close-range header parried behind by Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Brosnan.

Everton, meanwhile, took advantage of a foul as the hosts cleared a Martina Piemonte effort off the goal-line, with Galli stepping up to make the difference from the spot.

Spurs will take solace from remaining unbeaten, and their fortunes in the final third will be aided by the return of forward Ellie Brazil, who was on the bench for the first time since suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury in October 2022.

They will hope to return to winning ways when they take on Liverpool and Leicester City in their next two games.

Another difficult test awaits the Toffees in their next match, however, as they face league leaders Chelsea next Sunday.
