Brighton & Hove Albion 0-1 Sheffield Wednesday, FA Cup third round

Championship side Sheffield Wednesday caused an upset in the third round of the FA Cup as they won away at Premier League Brighton.

The Owls, eighth in the second tier, grabbed the only goal with a well-worked free-kick routine, although Adam Reach's low strike took a deflection.

Steven Fletcher had earlier had a shot well saved, before he was carried off in the second half with a knee injury.

Brighton's Gaetan Bong and Neal Maupay both missed chances when it was 0-0.

The Seagulls lost at Wembley in the semi-finals to eventual winners Manchester City last season but were beaten at home in their first cup match of 2020 as the Owls secured their place in Monday's fourth-round draw.

Graham Potter made seven changes to the Seagulls side that began the 1-1 draw against Chelsea on New Year's Day but this defeat means they have now won only twice in 11 matches.

The hosts' first chance fell to Bong, but his header from a Steven Alzate cross was pushed over the top by Cameron Dawson.

Wednesday's keeper then had a lucky escape when he sprinted out of the penalty area and Maupay took the ball around him, only for Dominic Iorfa to deny the Frenchman with a superb sliding challenge with the goal unguarded.

The Owls themselves made six changes from the side that lost 1-0 against Hull on Wednesday and one of those players, 12-goal top scorer Fletcher, produced a wonderful save from David Button in first-half injury time.

But Wednesday suffered a setback when the Scotland international was carried off on a stretcher with a knee injury early in the second half, replaced by Sam Winnall.

Brighton, who saw Shane Duffy's header saved on the goal-line, fell behind in the 65th minute as the Owls gained a free-kick on the edge of the penalty area.

Jacob Murray nudged the ball to Winnall, he stopped it and passed it to Reach, who was able to strike at goal, with a deflection taking it past Button.

The hosts, 14th in the Premier League, had chances for an equaliser but Maupay headed wide and an overhead kick from substitute Alireza Jahanbakhsh went over the top.

Brighton manager Graham Potter told BBC Sport: "Credit to Sheffield Wednesday; they deserved to go through. We huffed and puffed but our second-half performance was disappointing. It was not a classic game of football but we need to do better.

"It would've been nice to have had a better performance and a victory. We wanted to win the game, so we're disappointed.

"We set out to win and we didn't, so we're disappointed. The only thing we can do is learn from it."

Sheffield Wednesday boss Garry Monk told BBC Sport: "We did very well. I thought it was a fantastic performance coming away to a Premier League side, especially after the week we have had.

"We had let ourselves down [with three successive defeats] but we showed the response we wanted and we deserved to win the game, so we have to be happy with that. This courage and attitude is what I wanted to see. We want a competitive squad and people to take their opportunities and this was a performance to be proud of.

"The FA Cup is such a great competition; I didn't make changes for the sake of it - they were deserved changes after the last week. I'm delighted that we're in the next round but I would like a home tie."

On Steven Fletcher's knee injury: "He has just had a quick X-ray and everything structurally is OK. It looks like he has hyper-extended his leg and hopefully it's not too serious."
