Walsall 2-1 Cambridge United

Josh Gordon scored after 49 seconds as Walsall ended a six-game League Two losing streak with a narrow 2-1 win over Cambridge.

Gordon netted his fourth goal in two games - after a midweek EFL Trophy hat-trick - as he bundled home Shay Facey's low cross as the U's protested in vain for handball.

Walsall doubled their lead after only 10 minutes as Mat Sadler netted a close-range header from Alfie Bates' corner.

United had chances to pull one back as Harvey Knibbs nodded Paul Lewis' cross straight at goalkeeper Liam Roberts from six yards and Sam Smith's glancing header from Liam O'Neil's centre hit the post.

But Walsall dominated proceedings as Caolan Lavery, Wes McDonald and Rory Holden all shot straight at Dimitar Mitov when well placed, while Bates curled inches wide.

After the break, Roberts tipped a shot from Cambridge substitute Jack Roles wide, before Mitov turned over a rocket from McDonald.

Knibbs steered Smith's 92nd-minute knockdown into the bottom corner to give Cambridge hope but Walsall held on to move five points above the drop.
