Grimsby Town A-A Macclesfield Town

Grimsby Town and Macclesfield Town will have to replay their EFL Cup second-round tie after heavy rainfall just before half-time left the field waterlogged at Blundell Park.

It was goalless between the two League Two sides, with Jak McCourt's free-kick which smacked a post for the visitors the best chance of either club when referee Darren Drysdale led the players off 30 seconds early before the break.

However, the deluge of rain, which lasted around 10 minutes, proved too much for the surface to cope with and despite giving the pitch time to drain, Drysdale was left with no option but to call it off.

Grimsby have urged fans to retain their ticket stubs, and say an announcement will be made on Wednesday regarding reissued tickets for the rearranged game.

Town boss Michael Jolley said: "I think in the end it was the right decision.

"We were hopeful that the rain might stop and it might improve, but every time the referee came out to the pitch it got worse didn't it. No complaints.

"The draw is made tonight so it will need to be done in time for the third round, but we have got a game next week anyway. It remains to be seen when it will be."

Macclesfield boss Daryl McMahon added: "No complaints at all. It was raining really heavily and there was a lot of surface water on the pitch.

"It would have been dangerous for the players had we returned. And looking at the weather, we would have only got 15 or 20 minutes in anyway.

"It was very unreal. I've never seen anything like it and I'm from Dublin.

"I was pleased with our performance, though, having made seven changes. I was enjoying the game, but no complaints."
