Cork have taken 10 points from their four league games against Derry this season

Derry City slipped to a 3-0 defeat against Cork City in their final home match of the season at the Brandywell.

Former Candystripe Barry McNamee opened the scoring for the visitors after 14 minutes before Gerard Doherty punched the ball into his own net.

Shane Daly-Butz's cross dropped straight in as Derry slumped to a third defeat at the hands of Cork.

Kenny Shiels' side take on Bray Wanderers on Monday before concluding against St Pat's next Friday.

With nothing left to play for, Derry were hoping to give their fans something to cheer about at the end of a season in what has been a turbulent season at the Brandywell.

A fan protest over ticket prices overshadowed Derry's Europa League qualifying match, however the Candystripes did secure some silverware at home defeating Cobh Ramblers in the EA Sports Cup.

Midfielder McNamee spent seven years at the Brandywell and made over 150 appearances before moving to Cork before the start of the current season.

He came back to haunt his old club, applying the finishing touch to a sweeping counter attack by stroking beyond Doherty.

The Candystripes failed to apply any sustained pressure on Peter Cherrie's goal at the opposite end and when they did put a shot on target through Ally Roy the Cork keeper was comfortably equal to it.

Captain Doherty made an uncharacteristic error shortly after the break to deflect Kieran Sadlier's hanging corner into the net.

Daly-Butz's cross-shot compounded Derry's misery as the final whistle was met with jeers from the crowd.

Ronan Hale forced Cherry into a decent save but the effort was not enough to mask the gulf in class between the two sides on show.
