Birmingham City maintained their perfect start to the Women's Super League season with victory at Reading.

Blues took an early advantage when Meaghan Sargeant fired in from Paige Williams' cross.

Emma Follis could have doubled the lead after the break, but Grace Moloney charged out to deny her.

Brooke Chaplen had Reading's best chance shortly after, but Ann-Katrin Berger saved sharply with her legs to earn her side a third successive win.

Lauren Bruton was also denied by Berger and Gemma Davison fired wide as the Royals were unable to turn their second-half dominance into an equalising goal.

Birmingham have won all three of their league games this season by a single goal, leaving them second in the table, behind Arsenal on goal difference.

Reading midfielder Remi Allen:

"We are really disappointed, we didn't show up for 45 minutes and Blues are a great side.

"If you give them 45 you probably never get them back in the game so we've got a lot to work on to turn it around next week.

"I think we put pressure on them in the second and we created chances. We didn't finish our chances and its ultimately cost us the game."

Birmingham midfielder Lucy Staniforth:

"Everyone keeps laughing because we keep winning 1-0 but we say it only takes one goal and a clean sheet to win a game.

"We would like to put the game to bed a bit earlier and that's something that we're going to keep working on when we've got weeks spare in the build up to next week's game."
