Onel Hernandez celebrates getting the second Norwich goal
Onel Hernandez scored an injury-time equaliser to earn Norwich a dramatic late draw at Birmingham in their Championship opener.
After a goalless first half, Jacques Maghoma put Blues in front when he latched on to a loose ball following a corner and hammered home.
Hernandez levelled six minutes from time with a left-foot after a fine individual run, but Birmingham thought they had won it when Viv Solomon-Otabor slotted in from six yards in the 89th minute.
But Hernandez grabbed his second of the game deep in stoppage time when he raced into the Birmingham box and fired home to earn the Canaries a point.
Blues' only summer signing, left-back Kristian Pedersen, made his debut and could yet be joined by more arrivals before the transfer window shuts after Garry Monk's side had their transfer embargo lifted on Thursday.
Connal Trueman impressed on his debut in goal for Blues and helped to keep the game level early on when he tipped Jordan Rhodes' close-range header over the bar.
Jota wasted a good opportunity to put Birmingham ahead early in the second period when he was put clear by Che Adams only to fluff his weak shot into the arms of Norwich keeper Tim Krul.
Krul saved again from Adams shortly afterwards and from the resulting corner Maghoma fired Blues in front.
After Hernandez levelled, Solomon-Otabor thought he had won it for the home side when he converted from a ball over the top only for the Norwich winger to fire home a second equaliser.
Birmingham manager Garry Monk told BBC WM: "It's always frustrating when you've got the lead with a minute to go.
"We've got a lot of positives from today, you can see how focused we are, second half we stepped it up really well.
"Overall I think it was a fair result, when you look at the chances both teams had."
Norwich boss Daniel Farke said: "We created a lot of chances and I am a bit disappointed we did not win.
"But a draw in the first away game is not too bad. We can live with that result."
