Lee Gregory's 24th-minute goal at Oakwell was his ninth of the season for Millwall

Millwall made it six successive away wins in the Championship by beating Barnsley to boost their play-off hopes.

The struggling hosts were punished for giving the ball away in their own half as Lee Gregory slipped home the opener.

And Ben Marshall doubled the lead after the break with a 25-yard shot which gave keeper Nick Townsend no chance.

Substitute George Moncur and Oli McBurnie went close for Barnsley, but they could not find a reply and lost their ninth home match of the season.

Millwall remain 10th in the table after their win, four points off a play-off spot, with Barnsley remaining precariously above the relegation places - on goal difference only following Birmingham City's 3-0 win over Hull.

Townsend was back in goal for the home side with Adam Davies missing the game because his partner is due to give birth, but he could do nothing to stop Gregory opening the scoring after the ball was played to him by Jed Wallace.

Barnsley centre-back Liam Lindsay glanced a header just over the bar and forced a save from Jordan Archer at the start of the second half, but Marshall's superb strike into the top corner was a killer blow.

Archer foiled Moncur from the edge of the box and McBurnie had a header hooked off the line before Fred Ondeyinma sliced wide in a one-on-one with Townsend at the other end.

The result meant Millwall equalled their club record for away wins, while Barnsley have failed to produce a home victory since early November - and taken only five points in seven games since Jose Morais became head coach.

Barnsley head coach Jose Morais told BBC Radio Sheffield:

"We conceded [the first goal] in a very childish way.

"We tried everything to score the goal we needed before they scored the second, but they had a good strike with the wind in their favour.

"When something like this happens, you just feel sorry it was not a goal for your team because it was a fantastic goal.

"We need to continue the good things we did today, and put in more concentration, more focus and more determination in certain situations."

Millwall manager Neil Harris:

"Any three points at this level is a good achievement.

"If you look at Barnsley, they have a distinct style of play - they've definitely improved. I thought we found another way to win the game, we dominated early on and then capitalised on a mistake.

"It was good composure from us to get the goal. I never felt in danger in the first half. We scored at a key time, Ben Marshall's goal was outstanding.

"I thought Barnsley threw caution to the wind in the last half an hour and were unlucky not to score."
