Australia pile on pressure to cause early England collapse

That's all for today, folks, and what a day it has been - not in a good way if you're a batter!

Wickets aplenty at the MCG, 20 all told, and it looks like this game would do well to make it to day three at this point.

Read Stephan Shemilt's report from a chaotic day in Melbourne here.

Join us again tonight for the second (and final?) day of this fourth Test. You never know, there's a slim chance we'll witness England's first Test win in Australia since 2011...

There is still plenty of life in this pitch, the weather is getting warmer, which will have an impact on top of the rollers.

So, it could get to the stage where England are batting in the fourth innings where they're batting in the best batting conditions of the match.

And here is another straw to clutch at, England fans...

Of all the Test matches, I think this is England's best chance.

They are a good chasing side. We have had three heavy rollers already and there will be another one tomorrow morning.

This England team can chase. Australia are favourites, but don't rule England out.

  5. 'A crazy day of Test match cricket'published at 07:50 GMT 26 December 2025

England bowler Josh Tongue, speaking to TMS: "Obviously a crazy day of Test match cricket. To bowl them out for whatever it was as a bowling unit, I thought it was outstanding. It is obviously a tricky pitch to bat on, but we will come back tomorrow fighting."

On the pitch: "I think there was about 10mm of grass on it this morning. We just felt like, me personally, that fuller length where mostly I get my wickets was going to benefit me and the team. We tried to hit the pitch as hard as we could."

On the Test match being over: "No, not at all. They lead by 50. We will come back refreshed tomorrow morning. We have got to make sure to stick to what we did today and come out tomorrow.

"It depends on the individual on how they see what fits. How Brooky batted was very good on that pitch and Gus at the end as well. I think judging when you're out there and seeing where your scoring options are and go from there.

"To be in the Ashes series is amazing. Now the Boxing Day Test match, 93,000 to take a fifer - a dream come true.

"We have been around everyone. Trying to fully focus on this game and making sure we get a win for England, then go on to Sydney.

"They [Barmy Army] have been amazing all series. Credit to them, staying here in Melbourne supporting us. We are doing it for the fans and everybody back at home."

As much as it is doom and gloom, there is one or two things you see.

Gus Atkinson is a good bowler, he gets it up there and wobbling it around.

There are things you see which is bad, but there are areas where this team can get better in the future.

England didn’t 'work hard' to get 10 wickets, they were gifted to them by the pitch. Absolutely no surprise they have not been able to match Australia on the same surface. Just a case of Australia being a better team, unfair to say England have thrown away a good chance.

This pitch has far too much grass on it. I was saying 7mm, but it is 10mm.

That pitch has too much life in it for Test cricket.

  9. 'Unfair contest' between bat and ballpublished at 07:40 GMT 26 December 2025

    Sir Alastair Cook
    Ex-England captain on TNT Sports

I think we have to talk a little bit about this wicket. It's not a great Test match wicket. Unless this flattens out on days three and four - if we get there - it's been too heavily weighted towards the bowlers.

The bowlers didn't have to work that hard for wickets. You put it in the right area it's going to nip either way. I actually think it's a bit of an unfair contest, that's me sticking up for the batters.

Could both sides have batted better? Yes. But I was watching some of the bowling on that pitch and I was thinking 'how do you face that?' Mitchell Starc was bowling round the wicket, some were nipping miles that way, and some nipping miles the other way.

I don't know how you hit it. It's a bit of unfair contest. If it flattens out tomorrow, and I think it should do but the curator says tomorrow it might be harder to bat on.

That first shot might have been a bit wild but given Harry Brook is the top scorer in the match so far with 41, he'd argue his ultra-attacking approach was the right one today.

And he would have a point given how much the pitch was doing...

Harry Brook's first shot, I was speechless. An absolute wild swipe.

If he got out to that I don't know what we would have been saying.

He is the vice-captain, you can't come out and play a shot like that, can you?

Terrific Tongue's five-wicket haul sinks Australia

England seamer Josh Tongue speaking to TNT Sports: "Growing up as a kid, words can't explain how I'm feeling. There was a lot of grass [on the pitch], it helped me massively.

"It's doing a bit out there with the new ball. You need to have a clear plan with how you're going to get your runs. Harry Brook took it to them and Gus Atkinson later on.

"I feel like anyone could have taken a five-fer today. It could have have been Brydon, it could have been Gus.

"When I'm at my best I'm bowling at that fuller length. Stokes has spoken to us quite a bit about it, going a touch fuller but hitting the pitch hard.

"We get the ball in the same areas tomorrow we get them three of four wickets down in the first hour."

Australia have got the bowlers who bowl the right length. They were relentless.

  15. What you've missed on day onepublished at 07:25 GMT 26 December 2025

Well, how to cram it all into one post?

Both teams have been bowled out on a chaotic first day of the fourth Ashes Test at the MCG.

England won the toss, chose to bowl and it all started so well on a green seamer.

Gus Atkinson struck first to remove Travis Head and then it was over to Josh Tongue as he got Jake Weatherald, Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith before lunch.

There was some brief resistance from Usman Khawaja, Alex Carey and latterly Michael Neser but England's bowlers would not be stopped.

Atkinson struck again, Ben Stokes and Brydon Carse got one each and then it was over to Tongue, who ended with 5-45, to finish off the innings with two in two.

It was three wickets in four balls wrap up the innings with Australia 152 all out on the stroke of tea.

At that point, England were delighted. It didn't last for long.

Australia's pacers quickly made the most of a pitch perfect for seam bowling as the tourists were reduced to 8-3 and then 16-4.

Harry Brook came out and tried, with some success to hit England out of trouble.

He put on 50 with Ben Stokes before falling lbw to Scott Boland for 41.

Boland then did for Jamie Smith and Will Jacks to leave Stokes' side on 77-7, but Gus Atkinson hit 28 before becoming the last wicket to fall as England were bowled out for 110, trailing by 42.

Australia had one over to face before the close, and Boland emerged as nightwatch to see it out as the home side finished a ridiculous day on 4-0 in their second innings.

I don't know how to summarise a day when Scott Boland on Boxing Day has ended up opening the batting for Australia. There has been plenty of movement out there.

This crowd will have gone home royally entertained, but this isn't Test cricket.

I question a lot of the technical side of the players. That's the third time in the series that England have been bowled out under 35 overs.

That is down to the application and technical side of some of the players.

Australia clearly have the edge but I'm with Chris, England are still very much in this match.

It's Perth in reverse. Bowl well tomorrow and Ben Stokes' side have a chance.

Descending into farce for both sides. Aussies don't care and we don't have the nous to take advantage. It's not funny, just embarrassing.
