That's it from us for today, folks. Another one that continues England's slow march towards an Ashes series defeat in Australia it seems.

You can read Stephan Shemilt's report from the Adelaide Oval here.

Ben Stokes' side need something incredibly special to come back to win from here and prevent Australia from winning the urn at the earliest possible opportunity.

The England skipper, along with Jofra Archer, dug in late in the day to provide the slightest glimmer of hope - but the situation remains dire.

We'll be back tonight to find out if England can mount a miraculous fightback on day three. Join us then... if you can face it!

  3. 'We are still fighting, it is not dead buried yet'published at 07:57 GMT 18 December 2025

England assistant coach Marcus Trescothick, speaking to TMS about Ollie Pope's form: "I don't think it has got that point where he is void of confidence. He didn't get the runs he wanted to get and found it tough.

"It goes like that if you get a couple of low scores - the pressure comes on. He will still work hard overnight and come back tomorrow. Come up with a game plan and then try to put that into place."

On technology: "Interesting. Of course, many things have happened over the last couple of days.

"We're kind of in the position that we are where we are with it. It is not something we can really dwell on. Of course, it has not been ideal. At the end of the day, you have got to put your trust and faith in what the umpires and match referees decide.

"If that is wrong, or we're unhappy with it, then the powers that be behind the scenes can make that decision. We're trying to remain as focused as we can on the boys and trying to keep them in the right frame of mind. I think you always want consistency with what that technology is. We're coaches and players - we want consistency in what that is.

"If we get that right, then the game is going to be better for it. Of course, we understand that we are behind in the game, again. Understandably you feel disappointed, but we're still in the game, and we're still fighting for as long as we can.

"We are still fighting, and it is not dead buried yet."

On the fans: "It is never easy watching us lose. We feel it as much as anybody else. The series has been brilliant with all the crowds. Of course, we are disappointed that we have not hit the mark that wanted to."

Watching England bat is like taking my puppy up the park. Every day I hope she won’t bark at the cars and be a nuisance. Every time England bat I hope they will play with some grit and determination. On all occasions I am disappointed.

This top seven has been consistently picked for a period of time now.

It was always going to be the week when they were going to be judged. They have gone with empathy of picking players consistently.

I get that when you're winning, but when you're losing a few games and making the same mistakes.

I'm not sure if it is the right approach to continue to pick the same players who make the same mistakes.

The two players at the crease are the two players who have shown any fight for England. Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer are worthy, the rest have a lot of catching up.

  7. 'We want consistency'published at 07:51 GMT 18 December 2025

England assistant coach Marcus Trescothick speaking to TNT Sports on Snicko: "I think you're disappointed, of course you. I think we're in a situation where you don't want to get drawn into it too much. If you sit on those sort of moments and bypass the reasons for what we're trying to do. We want consistency, with any technology that you have, you want consistency that both team's going to have in every series that you play.

"But taking that into account, when that doesn't quite work you've still got to respect the umpire's decision, the match referee's decision. It's left for the hierarchy to work more than anything else. We can't dwell on it too much, it is what it is, it's not like we can suddenly get back to 40-50 of Carey's runs or change what happened today, it's something you have to move on with pretty quickly."

On if there's anything England would do differently: "I'm sure there's many different things, as you can imagine. Players have their plans and their methods of what they're trying to do. I would have loved for us to bat and get more hundreds, as anybody does, consistency of runs and big scores make a difference in any series.

"The first couple of wickets were a bit more challenging than what this is then Australia made it tough for us today. Every player is trying to develop their game, even mid-series trying to come up with solutions to overcome plans that the opposition put in place. If you do that better hopefully we can learn from that and make it better tomorrow and beyond."

A tale of two balls - Double Snicko controversy as Smith given out

England can't - and to this point, have not tried to - blame Snicko for their struggles in this match but the technology was again called into question today.

"Snicko needs to be sacked" was the view of Mitchell Starc after it claimed the ball had not hit Jamie Smith's glove despite replays suggesting it had.

Replays also showed the ball had bounced before Usman Khawaja caught that one in any case but the controversy went on with Smith given out soon after.

A murmur on Snicko but after the ball had passed the bat and with the suggestion of a gap between bat and ball...

England suffer big blow as Cummins dismisses Root for 19

England's footwork - they're just not going anywhere. In Australia you're dead against really good bowling if you don't move your feet into position.

Joe Root's a master, he's one of the all-time greats and Cummins has got him out 12 times in Test cricket, great length, but if I was in the England camp that'd be something that was really worrying me.

The England Lions as well, what's being coached?

  10. 'Another tough day'published at 07:43 GMT 18 December 2025

England assistant coach Marcus Trescothick, speaking to TMS: "Another tough day. In the heat here, some of the guys fought really well. Ben's innings digging in and sort of lasting out the day and surviving as long as he could. Struggling with cramp because of the heat. Australia bowled well and put us under pressure.

"We have a bit of work to do tomorrow to get into a total that we're happy with and feel like we can compete in the second innings.

"I know we have talked about it before that we haven't been good enough for long enough in certain periods. I thought Australia bowling on that pitch was pretty good.

"We are looking at it hard, and we're trying to find solutions. We have got to be better for longer and keep sustaining our approach and our attitude at what we're trying to do.

"We have tried to adjust. We're always trying to be positive, we're always trying to apply pressure back into the game and get ahead of games. And put ourselves in the front seat. Sometimes you have to adapt, you can see the way Ben has played today. He has decided to play in that fashion. Other times we are aggressive, and we try to put the opposition on the back foot."

First day at Perth, the overall performance has been extremely average. No team is going to rock up in Australia and beat a national side having not played any meaningful cricket in those conditions prior to or during the series. It doesn’t make any sense.

The way Australia bowled today, they just don't give you anything.

Mitchell Starc didn't pick out many wickets, but from the first ball he was ready to go.

Pat Cummins comes back in the zone and then Scott Boland, if there is anything in the pitch, he just finds that.

    You're always facing good deliveries.

It's no surprise that Ollie Pope is coming under pressure after his extremely soft dismissal today and general lack of runs in the series.

He surely needs a big score in the second innings to keep his place for Melbourne.

But his one was of very few loose shots that led to wickets. Mostly, Australia's bowlers were just too good for England.

'That's a terrible shot!' - Pope out after flicking ball to Inglis at mid-wicket

Ollie Pope gifted Nathan Lyon the simplest of dismissals. When you play Test cricket you're going to be playing the best bowlers. The last thing you want to do is gift an off-spinner a simple wicket like that.

There has been a lot of criticism with the way he has started in the past. It is justifiably so when you watch how he goes about it.

It looks to me that he is trying so hard to get himself a start that he is hanging the bat, and he is too frantic about how he goes about scoring.

There were a couple of gifts, when you look at the Ollie Pope dismissal and the shot that Jamie Smith played. I think around that Australia have been relentless.

Pat Cummins led from the front, Australia piled off the back of that. Nathan Lyon was miserly at one end and the seamers rotated.

Well, as far as confidence is concerned, James, I think it's clear that has been dented by the first two Tests.

As for mentality, that is a harder to answer. We know Ben Stokes doesn't lack in that regard and he's shown that again today by really digging in to try and get England that bit closer to Australia.

  18. 'We're still fighting'published at 07:24 GMT 18 December 2025

England assistant coach Marcus Trescothick speaking to TNT Sports on Ben Stokes: "He's worn out, cramping and trying to get the fluids in. He was really struggling to get the carbohydrates, he just said he was going to be sick every time.

"He's pretty broken in there, but the medical team will work on him overnight and get him back in the frame of mind for tomorrow."

On England's batting: "Challenging, we're in a position we don't want to be. Eight down and still a number of runs behind.

"But we're still fighting, we're still in the game in terms of trying to make something happen tomorrow, we've still got an opportunity to come out with 10-11 overs of the old ball and try and capitalise.

"We understand it's not been easy, we haven't quite been at our best for long enough in the games that we've played and Australia have bowled well and put us under pressure.

"The areas they hit, making the ball bounce on a good pitch. I think we all appreciated it looked good, and it was going to be consistent for a number of days.

"There might be the odd dent in it, and a few cracks underneath, it's been so hot for two days. Credit to them for how they've gone about it, they've really made it a challenge for us.

"I don't want to give too much away about what we talked about, it's quite a sacred place but we think that we have plans and we try to come up with solutions in what we're trying to do and they made it tough for us, that can happen in different situations."
