'Lovely bowling' from Lyon to dismiss Stokes for five

That's from us for today, folks. In many ways a decent day for England and yet one that ends with Australia on the brink of retaining the Ashes.

How is that possible? Well you can read Stephan Shemilt's report from the Adelaide Oval to find out.

We'll be back tonight for day five with Australia needing four wickets to go 3-0 up and England requiring a highly unlikely 228 more runs to keep the series alive.

    Join us then!

I don't think they can carry on without making a change.

The accountability of the batsmen and there doesn't seem to be any in this team because there is no pressure on the places. Only person to come in is Jacob Bethell. Who knows what he can bring.

You get out, rash shot. 'Anyway, I'm playing next week so that's good news.' You need to have people breathing down your neck.

  3. 'We came here to win the Ashes'published at 07:42 GMT 20 December 2025

England opener speaking to TNT Sports about his dismissal: "Half an hour, I'm absolutely still nowhere with it. I don't know how I missed it to be honest, it was right there and I have no idea. I felt calm out there, I felt in a good place, clear in my game plans but it's always more annoying when you don't see it coming like that."

On the team mood: "They're just flat. We came here to win the Ashes, we're always an optimistic team, an upbeat team, and we'll try and put up as much fight as we can but it's disappointing to come here and lose the first three games - well, we'll see how tomorrow goes but we're probably up against it."

On the reverse sweep: "There's more fielders on the leg side for the sweep so we'll hit the one where there's less fielders there. I did a couple of sweeps early, but then they moved the guys square on the leg side, so when they're a point and deep point it's harder to get caught so that's when I started reversing.

"I was just trying to get as far out as I could with it. Long reach to cover the one if it hit the rough. Other times it might be slightly different but that's what I was going for today."

On Harry Brook's dismissal reverse sweeping: "Personally I'd rather see someone get out like that than defending on that pitch. No-one in the group would ever criticise that, we would never question Harry on anything to be fair! I'd much rather that than prod towards short leg and get caught. We're trying to put them under pressure, you're going to get out somehow and I'd rather it that way."

On how England's batting plans have evolved: "It's a tough one because everyone's got to play their individual games. We often talk about putting pressure on them, absorbing pressure, and to be honest with you they've bowled so well, there's been a lot more absorbing that we'd have probably liked. They didn't give us much, they're very accurate bowlers, probably their greatest strength. We're just trying to find ways to put them under pressure, but they've stood up to us, they've been unbelievable to be fair."

  4. 'Need to see a lot more from Jamie Smith'published at 07:39 GMT 20 December 2025

    Justin Langer
Former Australia head coach on TNT Sports

I was fortunate enough to coach Jamie Smith at London Spirit last summer - he's got enormous talent, but I need to see a lot more from him.

Not just with the bat but with his energy too. I know he's an introverted kid but I need to see more from him.

The energy in the field, he's got to drive it in the field. With the bat, I know he's down on confidence but he's got the ability to absolutely nail it.

  5. 'We saw an opportunity to do something special'published at 07:37 GMT 20 December 2025

Crawley stumped on 85 as Australia close in on win

England's Zak Crawley, speaking to TMS: "We were never going to give up. It is always going to be tricky - fourth innings Adelaide with the quality of their bowling attack - we tried our heart out like we have the whole time.

"We have been successful chasing because we play like it is the first innings. We try to take the scoreboard out of it. I was pleased with the way I played. It is still fresh. I am still upset about it, but pleased with how I played in total.

"We were never going to give up. Every time you bat it’s an opportunity. We saw it as a great opportunity to try do something special. They have bowled well and were up against it now. But we were never going to give up.

“We came here to win the Ashes. We are probably up against it. It is flat. Disappointed we have not performed how we want to. Fair play to Australia, they have been quality throughout.

"It hasn’t surprised me. I know how good they are in their own country. They have great players all over the place. They’re a top side, and we had to be at our best to get something."

On pressure on Ollie Pope: “Maybe from you guys, but not from inside the camp. We all know how good of a player he is. I think he has had a good year if I’m honest.

"He has played some really good knocks. It is talk from the outside. No chat like that on Ollie in the camp.”

Crawley's 85-run knock gives England hope of unlikely win

England opener Zak Crawley speaking to TNT Sports: "It's obviously disappointing, we came here to win the Ashes and we're up against it. It's tricky, we put up a good fight with the ball and tried to do our best with the bat but yeah, disappointed right now.

"I just tried to 'see ball, hit ball' and they bowled really well, they didn't give me anything early. I was waiting for it come but they just held their lines, held their lengths. I think I got my fluency as I got in, but it wasn't a conscious effort, I was just trying to play.

"It was a plan not to let them get into rhythm, try to get some fielders out from around the bat. I thought Joe Root played really nicely, and then I managed to get a couple away myself and it felt a bit easier for a little bit. But they are relentless in these conditions, they're a really good bowling line-up.

"They're phenomenal, they're the best bowling attack I've played against for sure, especially in these conditions when it was spinning like that for Lyon.

"They don't give you anything, they make the ball move. We knew that coming that, we knew we had to be at our best and unfortunately we were just short of that. In fairness to them they've been phenomenal in the last three games."

The next came after another promising partnership.

Nathan Lyon, who had been ineffective until this point, bowling Harry Brook as the England man attempted a reverse sweep.

The Australia spinner quickly took two more wickets and from there, it looked - and still does look - like game over.

England in this match generally have tried to play in the traditional way.

Why can't they play like this more often? Why haven't they played like this in the series? Why are they trying to rewrite the way you play Test cricket?

Australia are giving them a lesson in how you play Test cricket - it hasn't changed.

Watching as an Australian it’s been a real shame for the series England didn’t play competitive practice matches. Clearly plenty of talent in the England team, but strange to pick a team for the last two years with this series in mind, then not prepare for it properly out in the middle.

Nathan Lyon was always going to have a big impact here. The way Crawley and Brook played him, they played him well, but the damage had been done.

Lyon showed what he could do. Crawley and Brook didn't let him settle, but once he got the breakthrough he was all over them.

  13. 'There's still a lot of work to do'published at 07:19 GMT 20 December 2025

Australia wicketkeeper Alex Carey speaking to TNT Sports: "We'll reflect on today and come up with plans for tomorrow, we know these guys are quality players right to the end. We want to keep working hard and probably not look too far ahead.

"I just thought Nathan [Lyon] was bowling really well and kept putting lots of energy on the ball. He toiled away all day and finally got some reward. I just wanted him to bowl with as much energy as possible, there's enough out there and he got a couple of late wickets.

"I always want to contribute to help this team win games of cricket. I understand there's still a lot of work to do tomorrow morning.

"So far so good, but personally I don't like to look too far ahead, maybe reflect, jump in the pool tonight, get home to the kids and then come back tomorrow and really look forward to it.

"The boys are bowling really great areas, we know it'll be hard work again."

England had a reasonable day, but the damage had been done. Australia batted them out of the game.

All we have been asking for throughout this series, and before it is for more basic cricket to be played, and they played it today.

Today they all tried to play sensibly.

  15. Postpublished at 07:16 GMT 20 December 2025

I keep hearing it said that Australia aren't a great side - and they might not be as good as previous Australian sides - but they're still the top-ranked team in Test cricket, Jonathan.

There might be a place or two in the batting order that they'd want to improve upon but otherwise they have pretty much all bases covered.

England have not been anywhere close to good enough in this series but let's not pretend this isn't still a very good Australia team.

This Ashes series, in terms of quality, has been one of the worst I have seen, particularly batting wise. The Aussies aren’t that great, it’s just that England are awful.

When England do damage it is catastrophic.

Travis Head gets a 170, we lose four wickets in clusters. It is not a couple of wickets then we rebuild.

The damage seems that you can't come back from it. You can't play Test cricket like that, it has gone and it is too far ahead.

  20. Close of play - Eng 207-6published at 63 overs

    Target 435

England take it into day five.

That's about as positive a spin as you can put on it. Australia are four wickets away from taking an unassailable 3-0 lead and retaining the Ashes.

The tourists need another 228 runs to prevent that. Don't count on it.

All that despite England actually having a reasonably good day and fighting hard.
