England win chaotic two-day Test to get on series scoreboard

After two crazy days of Test cricket, it's all over at the 'G - and England have won!

The Ashes won't be coming home but the 15-year wait for a Test win in Australia is over.

You can read Stephan Shemilt's excellent report on how it all unfolded on day two here.

And you can check out his player ratings for both sides here.

At times it has felt like England may never win in Australia again, now they will head to Sydney hoping to add a bit more respectability to the scoreline and make it 3-2.

Such a quick finish means we've got a slightly longer wait before the fifth Test but at least there is an England win to savour in the meantime.

We'll be back on 3 January (23:30 GMT) for the final Ashes Test for 18 months, be sure to join us then!

  2. 'A special feeling'published at 08:02 GMT 27 December 2025

England captain Ben Stokes, speaking to TNT Sports: "It is a special feeling. Me and Joe have been on a few tours, and it has not gone particularly well.

"In particular, the couple days build-up to this Test match was a tough time for us as a team. The way in which we were able to keep the focus on the most important thing, which is the cricket that is played out there, was pretty exceptional.

"To come out here and put in a performance like that in the way we did, a lot of credit has got to go to the way not just myself, but how the senior boys handled that situation."

  3. 'We showed great bravery' - Rootpublished at 07:59 GMT 27 December 2025

England batter Joe Root, speaking to TNT Sports:"It feels a lot better.

"Disappointing that it is not to affect the series, but it is important that, after everything which has been thrown at the group, to respond in that fashion.

"To find a way on that wicket. I think it shows good cricket smarts in many ways.

"Today we showed great bravery - to play with that conviction. Very proud of the rest of the boys.

"When you're out there you know what the job is, and you know what is required.

"I wanted to be there at the end with Brooky, but I wouldn't change being not out for the result.

"It certainly felt hard. I think it required a different set of skills than it has done in the last couple of weeks.

"The way Jacob played, the way he used that crease, up and down the wicket making it difficult against a good attack.

"The way the guys managed that made it difficult for them to create pressure.

"We knew that if we had our length and operated in that 5-7m length we were going to have chances and opportunities.

"The way they delivered was outstanding, especially with a bowler down as well."

On Jacob Bethell and Zak Crawley: "They're huge talents. We have seen glimpses of what they're capable of at this level."There is so much they can offer. Winning here, in that manner, will fill them with a lot of confidence. We have always had talent, we always have good players in and around this squad."

    Too right, we can, Claire.

Of course, England fans wish this had come sooner and disappointment over the first three Tests is understandable but after nearly 15 years, I think it's only right to savour a win in Australia.

Got to lay down a marker for 2027 after all...

Finally from England skipper Ben Stokes, speaking to TMS...

On the Barmy Army: "They have been with us not only on this tour - they're with us everywhere we go.

"Obviously, in the Ashes it means so much to us. We know how much it means to the fans that follow us around'

"Great thing about it is the noise, the chants and the atmosphere they bring. Is completely the same from the first games before this.

"They are with us through thick and thin. Hopefully, tonight they will do stuff that will give them slightly a bad head in the morning."

There had not been a two-day Test in the Ashes since 1921, now we've had two in four matches. There'd never been two in a series since the 1890s, when England played a very, very weak South African team.

And there had never been two two-day games in an Ashes series since 1888, when all three games were completed in two days. But cricket and pitches were very, very different then.

142 overs in this game, five balls longer than Perth. The second and third shortest Tests ever played in Australia, ninth and 10th shortest ever played anywhere in the world in terms of completed matches, ignoring games that were shortened by rain or other other factors.

847 and 852 balls - there hadn't previously in the Ashes since the 19th century been a game below 1,000 balls or 170 overs, so that puts into context quite how absurdly short these games have been.

  8. 'Method to the mayhem'published at 07:47 GMT 27 December 2025

More from England captain Ben Stokes, speaking to TMS about Brydon Carse batting at number three: "Well, look, it was one of those you look at how all the top order batters were just struggling to find a way to score runs and the ones who scored runs were down the order.

"The way that Brooky took it on in the first innings looks to be very proactive trying to knock bowlers off their length and put them under pressure. We thought it was something we were willing to risk.

"If it did come off and get a quick 30-40 that's huge in little run-chases like this.

"It didn't work out that way, but there was a method to the mayhem.

"I wouldn't say it was funny. It was a tactical plan that unfortunately didn't pay off for us."

Australia will be kicking themselves because they walked in today and they were 40 or 50 runs ahead. In a low-scoring game that is a lot of runs to be ahead.

They had an opportunity - with England a bowler down - to nail England and they didn't take it.

Some of the shots they played, yes it was nipping around and a lottery, were poor.

Now whether that was a little of subconsciously they were ahead, they were 3-0 up and not on it as much as were, only they will know the answer. But Australia were not good today with the bat.

England breaking that sequence of 18 without a win in Australia means they do not hold that record on their own.

New Zealand also had an 18-match winless run in this country that they broke with a win in Hobart in the 2011-2012 season, although they had more draws than England did.

Before this game, England's previous longest winless run in Australia was 12 matches between 1936 and 1951.

Absolutely, Gus. An important contribution from Harry Brook.

He wasn't quite so aggressive when he came in today but, as ever, he still played his shots...

A word for Harry Brook. Lots of talk about his lack of maturity and game awareness leading into this game but he top-scored in the first innings and was not out in the second. Big performance from our vice-captain.

  13. 'Pitch was not the best'published at 07:35 GMT 27 December 2025

More from England skipper Ben Stokes, speaking to TMS...

On the pitch: "I think even Steve [Smith] knew it was going to do a bit, but that was not the best, was it?

"36 wickets in less than two days and nothing over 200. I think you can read into that a lot.

"If that was another condition somewhere else and that happened, you probably would get a pasting.

"That is what we had to try play our cricket on and, you know, when the pressure was on and the moment mattered, we were able to stand up and deliver something good.

"In that pressure moment, if I'm honest, is what we have not been able to do so far in the series. Obviously, very ecstatic about the result that we managed to get here.

"We still have one more to go, and the focus has not moved away from that. We had two games, and we want to get two results in our way."

It was nice to freshen it up a bit and bring a few new faces into the side.

England owed their skipper one there. They have been in for some criticism with how they have played.

You do get the feeling it is a dressing room that is very much together.

  15. 'That was a test of character'published at 07:29 GMT 27 December 2025

More from England captain Ben Stokes, speaking to TMS about the scrutiny on England from the media: "You get tested as leaders within sporting teams and organisations all the time in different ways. That was a test of character, a test of qualities, of leadership.

"The way we went about it, not only in public, in terms of all the media and all that sort of stuff.

"Behind the scenes, it was so important that everyone's focus was still on the cricket. It would have been so easy to put our focus and attention on all that stuff outside the dressing room.

"At the end of the day, the most important thing for us is what we need to do out there.

"We stayed focused and committed to making sure we put everything that was possible into getting a win this week.

"I am very, very proud of the group and proud of certain individuals."

Stokes hits off stump to bowl Weatherald for five

England captain Ben Stokes, speaking to TMS: "Great feeling. It happened very quickly. The game was set up for us to chase down a total. Suddenly, when you have a target, it makes things a lot easier.

"The way that wicket played throughout, it was clear and obvious how we had to take that game on.

"Not the best advertisement for Test match wickets. You have to face the conditions that are in front of you.

"I thought the way we bowled this week was exceptional, the way we went about that run-chase was exceptional.

"On the back of everything we had to deal with building up to in this game, I couldn't be prouder as a captain of the way we held firm as a group and as individuals as well.

"It is a very proud moment knowing how tough this tour has been and how everything has gone before this tour coming here.

"So to get that win in over a long period of time we have been waiting for is pretty pleasing."

Carse bowls Head for 46 to take 'big wicket' for England

England seamer Brydon Carse, speaking on TNT Sports: "We've stuck together on this tour. It's nice to reward the fans with a positive result.

"That [batting at number three] decision was made quite early on in our innings. Baz came on and said, 'Do you fancy it?' and I said, 'Why not?'

"We knew there was 10mm grass on the wicket. I didn't think it would do as much as it did. Credit to the guys in the second innings, it's paid off today.

"We've needed this as a side. We go to Sydney with a lot of confidence. If we can grab another win there that'd be great."
