  2. 'Credit to the selectors'published at 04:59 GMT 21 December 2025

Australia's Marnus Labuschagne, speaking to TMS: "The position we're in now, a little bit of nerves there with some really good batting by Jamie Smith and Will Jacks. We held firm as we have been all series.

"Patient and you know it is a great feeling to be where we are."

On England not facing Australia's strongest side due to injuries: "Look, what I will say it just shows the depth we have, but also the versatility and the conditions we are playing in.

"To play Neser at the Gabba because it suited that surface. We didn't feel Nathan would play as big of a part and then Nathan to come here and have the impact in his over.

"Credit to the selectors for that they have created that adapt and whatever the team needs and being able to do that."

  3. 'We'll assess in Melbourne' - McCullum on potential changespublished at 04:59 GMT 21 December 2025

More from England coach Brendon McCullum, speaking to TNT Sports, on possible changes for Melbourne: "Not from outside the squad, no.

"Now is not the time to start looking at things which are outside the realm of what you had control over at the start.

"We'll have a look a look at the conditions and, as we always do, we'll try and work out what we think will give us the best chance in that game.

"If that's changes, it's changes. If it's not, it's not. We'll assess that when we get to Melbourne."

  4. 'We've got strong leaders in the side'published at 04:58 GMT 21 December 2025

More from England coach Brendon McCullum, speaking to TNT Sports...

On if Ben Stokes has enough support from others in the team: "Absolutely. I'm a firm believer that leadership doesn't come from how many games you've played or whether you're the best player in the team.

"For me, leadership is about exhibiting the behaviours of leadership, being able to embrace pressure and the challenge, and always keep the team tight enough and head towards the goal.

"Based on that, I think we've got a lot of strong leaders within the side. Plus you add the experience and best players, someone like Joe Root, we have the leaders with the side.

"Stokesy has gone out there and tried to be the best version of himself as well. We know he's always going to leave everything out there, he's unbelievably driven and competitive.

"He'll be hurting now because he had high expectations too. But we've got a job to do the next few days to turn our attention to the next one, not just Stokesy but all the leaders in the group have got a part to play."

  5. 'Disappointing that decision making became blurred'published at 04:57 GMT 21 December 2025

More from England coach Brendon McCullum, speaking to TNT Sports: "When you're put under immense pressure, your decision making can become a little blurred at times and you don't know whether to stick or twist.

"That's probably the disappointing aspect because I did think we were rock hard in our belief of the style we were going to play when we were down here, knowing we were going to be challenged.

"But I do think we got a little bit stuck and, again, I'll put my hand up as coach and say there should have been that absolute clarity of 'whatever happens in this series, this is how we need to play' because that is going to give us our best chance.

"We've set the team up with the skillset of the players and the personalities, we've set the environment up like that. Maybe we didn't get it right in the last stages leading into those games.

"There is an immense amount of talent in that dressing room, some very good characters and steely belief to try and achieve. But we've fallen short in this series."

  6. Postpublished at 04:55 GMT 21 December 2025

Australia needed four English wickets to seal The Ashes on day five of the third Test at Adelaide.

Jamie Smith and Will Jacks put on 91 for the seventh wicket to give England hope, but Mitchell Starc removed Smith for 60 to set Australia on their way.

The left-armer seamer returned to dismiss Jacks for 47, seeing Marnus Labuschagne take a superb catch to break a 52-run partnership with Brydon Carse.

Jofra Archer became Starc's third victim when he was caught in the deep, before Josh Tongue edged another catch to Labuschagne to end the match.

  7. 'Maybe I didn't get preparation right'published at 04:53 GMT 21 December 2025

More from England coach Brendon McCullum, speaking to TNT Sports: "What did we get right? What did we get wrong? Probably go back to the preparation as well, that'll be something that gets questioned and when you've lost 3-0, you need to put your hand up and say 'maybe I didn't get that preparation right'.

"It's not just leading into the first game. It's could we have done more leading into game one and could we have done less leading into game two? Work out those things and you're responsible for that. I didn't get that right because we lost 3-0. Lots to digest, look through and be better next time.

"We do have a great opportunity in the next two Tests, that the message to the boys.

"We need to find something out of this tour, salvage some pride and play for all the people who have come to Australia to support this team and all the people back in England who have supported this team as well.

"If we get into that state where we just play the game and immerse yourself in the state of what needs to be done and allowed your talent to come out in pressure situations that you've got every opportunity."

  8. 'When you're slightly off, you pay for it'published at 04:49 GMT 21 December 2025

England captain Ben Stokes, speaking to TMS: "Definitely seen glimpses of taking responsibility in the moment when you have that opportunity to go out there, and it is your moment.

"If we can look to build on that and understand that moments in the game require a certain style of play.

"Turning up and just showing as much fight as you possibly can. We have had some good moments, but on reflection of this game you have to execute as often as you can.

"When you're slightly off, you pay for it up here. That has been a common theme throughout the series so far. A lot of good to take, but emotions are a little deflated."

  9. 'We will be flying into these next two games'published at 04:46 GMT 21 December 2025

England captain Ben Stokes, speaking to TMS: "Again, it is understanding the moments where the game is at. How you feel like you need to apply yourself as an individual.

"We have seen Zak, who I thought played exceptionally well. Even Jamie and Will last night having to go out and deal with that last half an hour.

"You could see that was the most important thing for the team to get through that night, start again tomorrow because that is when you win the game.

"They battled hard through that, they battled hard this morning. When the moments came for them when they could put the pressure on Australia, it didn't work out.

"That is the game of cricket. Fine margins of sport. We have had our moments in this game here where we were so, so close in this game.

"It feels like the three games have been so, so close, but you cannot be so, so close against a team like Australia.

"We have got so much to play for, and we will be flying into these next two games."

  10. 'We have not been good enough' - Stokespublished at 04:41 GMT 21 December 2025

England captain Ben Stokes, speaking to TMS: "Mixed emotions, obviously. What we came here to do we can no longer do.

"Then you look at what we have managed to do throughout the five days in terms of on the back of last week to take it, it doesn't seem as close. There was moments there I thought we were pulling of a heist, which we have done a few times. It goes back to that execution not being good enough for long enough.

"When you come up against a team like Australia in conditions where they execute over and over again. You can look back on the first few games and know that we have not been good enough.

"On the end of the result that we didn't want, I can honestly take a lot out of what we have to do in the last few games.

"The character, the fight, the standing up to whatever Australia throws at us whatever moment it may be.

"Then we weren't able to respond with how we wanted to respond with the bat.

"We knew we had a great opportunity to put on a huge amount of runs on the board and put Australia on the back foot, but we weren't able to do that. We were able to restrict that deficit to even 80 and again yesterday morning and taking 6-40 that doesn't happen by chance or fluke. That happens by always staying in the game and not letting it drift.

"Thee wickets last night was disappointing. Watching Will and Jamie apply themselves in the way we did. Brydon, constantly wanting to, you know, be there in the moment and fight got the group, the team and themselves.

"That is something I can take pride out of as captain of this team. We have so much to play for in these next two games. We have got our pride, the badge, people coming out over Christmas and new year we aint going to mill through these last two games. There is a hell of a lot to play for."

  11. 'We got in our own way and stymied our talent'published at 04:36 GMT 21 December 2025

    Media caption,

'What's he done?' - Lyon bowls Brook after reverse sweep attempt missed

More from England coach Brendon McCullum, speaking to TNT Sports: "I do feel the last day and a half, two days, have probably been our best cricket and that's because we've just played.

"The previous nine days, we were so caught up and driven to succeed, we've almost got in our own way and we've stymied our talent and our skill and ability.

"It's only the last two days where we've let go and just played that we've actually competed. There's a lesson for that, not just for the players, for the coach and coaching staff.

"How do you free guys up when the pressure is at its highest? They are things that you have to learn."

On intensity and scrutiny: "I think we anticipated it but there's ways you can deal with it and ways try and block it out.

"Or you can just lean into it, accept it and see it as a privilege that you're in a position to try and entertain, capture eyeballs and do people proud.

"We were so determined to do that, we had such high hopes for this series that it just constrained us a little bit. We weren't able to deal with that and again it's something we'll have to look at."

  12. 'To wrap the Ashes up is a huge moment'published at 04:32 GMT 21 December 2025

    Media caption,

Head's 'wonderful' 170-run innings puts Australia firmly in control

Australia batter Travis Head, speaking on TNT Sports: "We've had a 'next man in' mentality. We've used 14 or 15 players with blokes coming in but [Mitchell Starc] has been huge.

"I'm not sure how many wickets he's got now but I couldn't think of three games better with the ball than he's had. He's stepped up with the bat as well, he's been awesome."

On winning in Adelaide: "Huge. A few weeks ago, I tempted the idea of finishing here so I've got my work cut off organising a few things in Adelaide. I'm looking forward to the next 48 hours."

On his century: "I think it's right up there. Winning a series and getting runs in the second innings, obviously. I would have loved a few more.

"To set the game up in the third innings, on a good wicket, I felt it was there.

"Opening the batting is new to me so nice to spend all day out there. To wrap the Ashes up is a huge moment."

On opening the batting: "I'm happy to bat anywhere in the team, I feel like I'm batting really well.

"Disappointed with a couple of starts I've got already in the series. We're going to two different venues now - Melbourne and Sydney - that have been tough against the new ball so looking forward to that challenge."

  13. 'Australia as precise and formidable as I've seen them'published at 04:31 GMT 21 December 2025

England suffer big blow as Cummins dismisses Root for 19

England coach Brendon McCullum, speaking to TNT Sports: "Obviously disappointed, we came here with high hopes, high ambitions and lofty goals.

"We've been outplayed across three Test matches by an Australian team who, to be honest, you follow from afar and I've not seen them be as precise as they have been, as formidable as they have been and consistent, with the way they've operated with the ball in particular.

"They've outplayed us with the bat, outplayed us with the ball and outplayed us in the field. You've got to cop it sweet when you don't quite achieve what you're hoping to."

On Australia's experience: "Coming here, you knew man-for-man experience-wise, they were going to have you but you were hoping that youth and enthusiasm might be able to line up with that.

"They've been outstanding, the balance within their attack, the relentlessness of Boland, Cummins and Neser then you've got Doggett, too, and the way Mitchell Starc has been just unbelievably attacking.

"He's taken wickets at key junctures and been able to put us under immense pressure consistently. He's made our job very difficult."

  14. 'You just crack on'published at 04:29 GMT 21 December 2025

Australia captain Pat Cummins speaking at the post-match presentation: "It feels pretty awesome. Amazing series that we've been thinking about a long time. It wasn't easy today, but we got it done. Pretty excited changing room in there."

On returning to fitness: "A fair bit of patience initially, and then the last two months it's been a bit of a grind. Give myself a chance and it's all worth it when you get days like this, packed crowd and retaining the Ashes."

On remaining calm: "I think that's when we're at our best, this cricket team. You can't really rush things in Australia. You can will it to happen but it doesn't really work that way. It's good old-fashioned grind a lot of the time. I love the toil from all the guys today. It got a little bit closer than I would have liked but pretty happy."

On strategy: "Yeah, a fair bit. First of all you need more than 11 players in an Ashes Test, five Tests. Even three Tests even we've shown that, we've used 14 or 15 players. Obviously Steve was really great. But I think it's focusing what we really do well as bowlers, not trying to get too carried away with the opposition, maybe throw in a few different fielders but focus on what we do well.

"I think that's one of the things I'm proudest about this group. Nothing ever happens perfectly, something always comes up, you just crack on. I missed the first couple of games, there's always things that crop up - Nathan Lyon doing his hammy today, but just crack on, what happens next and I think that's one of the reasons we've had our success."

  16. 'There will be plenty of questions asked' - McCullumpublished at 04:23 GMT 21 December 2025

England head coach Brendon McCullum, speaking to TMS: "If we play like we did over the last few days, we give ourselves a much better opportunity at being able to salvage something out of the last two Test matches.

"It has not easy coming down here. We came with high expectations, hopes and ambition. We have not lived up to it so far. We want to be able to show what we are capable of achieving down here in tough conditions. This one is going to hurt.

"It is disappointing when you lose, and I'm sure there will be plenty of questions asked and rightfully so. We haven't got everything right. I haven't got everything right as a coach and I put my hand up for that. You accept that and you try to work out ways you can work and identify things you need to make sure to polish up on to give yourself more chance.

"I have been very strong about the conviction we had and our preparation and, you know, for us, it was a matter of trying to replicate what we have done in series what has been successful for us away from home with our preparation. Maybe we didn't get that right and I'll acknowledge that. Obviously, we haven't won, so you point back to what you might have done differently. If you're in the same situation next time, would you make a change?

"So there's a couple of things like that we haven't been accurate and precise with the ball and not been able to score the volume of runs. Credit goes to Australia. They have been as precise as a team as I have seen in the last few years. They put us under pressure throughout. We only had fleeting moments in the last three Test matches where we felt like we were on top.

    "Fair play to Australia."

On the preparation for Brisbane Test: "The five intense training days leading into Brisbane when we knew it was going to be hot. A few things you look at retrospectively.

"Your job as a coach is to try get performance on the field. I was confident we had it right but obviously we didn't."

    Media caption,

'Absolutely sensational' diving catch from Labuschagne dismisses Pope for 17

More from England captain Ben Stokes: "Looking back on this game, losing the toss then keeping Australia to an under-par score we thought.

"Not being able to respond with the bat when we knew that was a great opportunity to put a big score on the board.

"Then to fight back the way that we did with the ball yesterday morning to take 6-38, we were confident of being able to chase it down because we knew how good of a wicket it was.

"Obviously there were challenges presented to us and we dealt well with them in passages then losing those three wickets at the back end of the day yesterday set us back a bit.

"All the stuff from last week about wanting to see more from the team, I can definitely say I've seen that this week.

"Some of the guys down the order stuck in and showed that courage and fight and responsibility I was asking for.

"Yes, we've been on the wrong side of the result but we can take a lot from this game into the remaining two. We've learned a lot about ourselves as a team as well."

On if too much loyally to players has cost them: "No, we've all done that to ourselves rather than any individual.

"We've not been consistent or relentless enough. Our execution just hasn't been anywhere near good enough to come here to Australia and compete with these guys.

"At the moment, the scoreline reflects that but we've got two more games and so much to play for. We aren't just going to fall over and let this series play out.

"We'll leave everything out on the field."

  18. 'Archer has been immense'published at 04:17 GMT 21 December 2025

    Media caption,

Archer takes five wickets as Australia bowled out for 371

England head coach Brendon McCullum, speaking to TMS: "It is not just the batting. With the ball, we took 6-70 on the morning of the fourth day.

"I thought our accuracy with the ball and the field we had and the intensity we had and the precision with our lengths was much more polished from the previous Test matches.

"I thought across the board it was an improved performance. Frustrating it has come at this time."

On Jofra Archer: "Jofra, he's had a terrific series. He has bowled brillaint for us. He has batted well. He has been in some big moments, and he has stepped up.

"He his a wonderful cricketer. We know how much playing for England means to him.

"He has worked unbelievably hard over the last couple of years. Turned down some significant opportunities around the world in short version cricket to commit to play for England in Test cricket. He has been immense for us."

  19. 'Outplayed in all three Test matches'published at 04:15 GMT 21 December 2025

England head coach Brendon McCullum, speaking to TMS: "We are obviously disappointed to lose the opportunity to win the Ashes, but I thought today and the last couple of days has been much better. Amazing what you can achieve when you just play.

"Sometimes we put so much pressure on ourselves and so much and seem to think about things other than playing the game. The last couple of days we have got back to what we do, which is immersing ourselves and just playing.

"We were much, much better. Disappointing to lose, we have been outplayed in all three Test matches by a formidable Australian performance, batting, bowling and fielding.

"I think the last couple of days is better for us, but we stand here 3-0 down."
