Spinner Liam Dawson said playing for England is "really cool" after believing he would never represent his country again.

Less than a year ago Dawson said he was "realistic" that his days of playing for England were over.

Since that moment, the 35-year-old has played in three One-day internationals, 17 T20 international games and one Test against India.

Before his reintegration to the England side in the summer of 2025, Dawson's last appearance came in late 2022.

"To be back involved and to play a part at the age I'm at has been really cool," Dawson told BBC Test Match Special.

"It brings expectation and pressure with that each time I play so all I can do is try to perform and enjoy the experience.

"I'll never do anything amazing but I like to think that I'm fairly solid and consistent for the captain, if I can do that every game then that will be ideal.

"Every chance I get to play for England now I have to enjoy it at my age."

When Dawson was confirmed to have made the England squad for the T20 World Cup he described his inclusion as a "dream come true". , external

The left-arm spinner has never made an appearance for England at a World Cup before this tournament despite being in the 2016, 2019, 2021 and 2022 squads, unused in all.

In this World Cup Dawson has played in all four of England's games and has taken four wickets so far.

Dawson added that he thought at his age that his chance of playing in a World Cup had gone.

"But I was very realistic that those World Cups I was involved with, you had Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid as your spinners, so I knew I was back-up to them as they're two world-class bowlers.

"I knew where I stood in those sides and I was very happy with that, but I kept working hard.

"I probably did feel I wouldn't play for England again at my age, hopefully I can play a few more games and perform."

England have won three of their four T20 World Cup matches so far, and successfully qualified for the Super 8s phase of the tournament.

Brendon McCullum's side will next face Sri Lanka on Sunday before games against Pakistan and New Zealand.
