Ex-Lancashire head coach Dale Benkenstein has been appointed as the new batting consultant at Durham.

South African Benkenstein returns to the club where he was a successful captain, having led Durham to successive County Championship titles in 2008 and 2009.

"I am excited to start a new chapter back at the Riverside and I have been made to feel at home by the many familiar faces who are still here from my playing days," he told the club's website, external.

"I have already enjoyed getting to work with the men's squad and I am equally excited to work with Will Gidman's talented academy and pathway players that will be the future of the club."

Since retiring from playing, Benkenstein has also been head coach of Hampshire.

After a spell as batting coach at Lancashire, he then took charge at Gloucestershire for two seasons before returning to Emirates Old Trafford as head coach before the 2024 season.

However, after relegation that summer, Benkenstein left the club in the middle of 2025 after a poor start to the campaign, with this new role at Durham his first job since then.

Durham director of cricket Marcus North added: "It's a fantastic opportunity for Dale to return home to a club he knows inside out, and he will bring a huge amount of insight and experience to the group as we approach the 2026 season."
