Centuries from Sean Dickson and Joe Denly helped Kent take a 431-run lead against Warwickshire after day two.
After 20 wickets fell on day one, Dickson (133) and Denly (119) shared a third-wicket partnership of 208.
Dickson, who reached his ton from one of his 17 boundaries, was trapped lbw by Bears captain Jeetan Patel (2-89).
Denly hit 13 fours and a six and, although Keith Barker (4-64) shone for the visitors, Kent closed on 359-6 in their second innings to seize control.
Kent centurion Sean Dickson:
"These were two polar opposite opening days. 20 wickets on the first day and now only six - and we're not quite sure why that is.
"It will be hard for us to take another 10 wickets to win this once we make them bat again, but as long as there's plenty still in the pitch for the new ball then we'll back ourselves to do it.
Warwickshire skipper Jeetan Patel told BBC WM:
"Kent batted really well. We threw a lot at them, ran in hard and tried a lot of things, but they stuck to their guns and sometimes in this game you just have to tip your cap and say 'well played'.
"We're behind in the game, everyone knows that, but in terms of effort I can't fault the guys. It's the first time we've had to spend a full day on the park and things didn't go our way with a couple of decisions."
