Guernsey bowler Lucy Beere will not compete at this summer's Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Beere, 43, won silver in the women's singles in Birmingham in 2022 - the first medal won by Guernsey at the event since 1994.

The 2024 European Championships silver medallist says she is unsure of her eligibility for the event this summer.

"Over a number of months I found myself navigating a complex and, at times, unclear eligibility process," she said in a statement.

"After a prolonged period seeking clarification regarding my eligibility, it was ultimately confirmed that I was eligible to trial. However, by that stage the process had taken a significant personal toll.

"In addition to the eligibility matters, there were also issues surrounding personal arrangements that had previously been accommodated at the last Games but were not supported on this occasion.

"The combination of these factors left me feeling increasingly isolated and uncertain about my ability to participate in the selection process in a healthy and positive environment."

Beere's silver medal in Birmingham was the first of two won by Guernsey four years ago - Alastair Chalmers won a bronze in the 400m hurdles as the island claimed two medals at a Commonwealth games for the first time.

The pair had been two of the island's best hopes for a medal this summer in Glasgow.

But she says the issues she feels she has faced over selection have taken a toll on her mental wellbeing.

"I sincerely hope that my experience may assist in improving processes and clarity for athletes in future Commonwealth Games cycles," Beere added.

"Athletes dedicate an enormous amount of time, effort and emotion to representing their country, and transparent, consistent processes are important for everyone involved.

"I would like to wish Team Guernsey every success at the upcoming Games and hope the team achieves outstanding results."
