Lou says "Book in advance," 'cause it's a small, popular, bustling restaurant - you can even sit outside in the summer - but TJ Parkinson doesn't agree...

What's your name?
Lou Wilford

Where is it?
Main Street, Wentworth, Rotherham, S62

What's the number?
01226 746162

What's the grub like, then?
This is an excellent restaurant in a beautiful setting with a car park right next door and two great pubs nearby.

The restaurant is small but very cosy, with lights twinkling in the trees outside so in winter it looks tremendously inviting - in summer, you can sit outside.

There is a five course fixed price menu, which changes regularly and contains an excellent range of dishes: starter, soup/sorbet, main course, dessert, coffee/mints, all for around £13.

Highlights have included the home-made meat and potato pie, braised lamb shank, Barnsley chop.

Food is old-fashioned and straightforward, not at all nouvelle cuisine - good sized portions, variable quality but mostly very good if unimaginative.

What did you drink?
House wine is pretty poor, really, but they have a reasonable range of wines if you're not too much of a connoisseur.

What's the crowd like?
The place is usually pleasantly overcrowded, with family groups - not rowdy at all, but quite loud due to smallness.

And the vibe?
Very pleasant atmosphere. Warm and welcoming.

Anything else you'd like to say?
It is becoming increasingly popular, so you'll need to book for the weekend.

Value for money?
Excellent value for money.

i thought the bistro was brilliant. How someone can peruse the amazing range of dishes on the set menu and just chose garlic mushrooms and steak says it all! There is an excellent range of delicious dishes and i would recommend it to anyone!

I have visited Le Bistro several times over the last three years. The food has been consistently good and the extensive set menu is superb value. Where else can you get 5 courses of such lovely food for around £15 a head? Admittedly, the restaurant is a little cramped but the overall impression is of cosiness and the ambience is relaxed and friendly. On one visit, I commented to my girlfriend on how nice her starter was. The manageress overheard and offered me the same dish as my second course in place of the sorbet. It is this sort of service and the attention to detail that puts Le Bistro head and shoulders above most of the competition in the area. 10 / 10

Well I love Le Bistro at Wenworth. SO much so that we held our wedding reception there in August 2002. And it was fantastic. Many of our guests commented on the food and said it was the best reception they had ever been to (and they werent just saying it to be nice). The staff and chef bent over backwards for us and even cooked a special meal of fillet steak & chips for my hubby as he is such a fussy eater. We are even booked in there on Christams eve. All I can say is I think its Fab. Keep up the good work :)

I have been to Le Bistro twice, and I came on this site to get the telephone number to book again! The service is quick, and nothing is too much for the staff. I had the warm chicken & bacon salad for starters last time, that was a meal in itself! Then the mushroom soup (but I don't like mushroom soup, I got it because someone wanted to try both dishes for their seconds and I feared I woudl be full if I ate anything else before my main meal! Then I had pork and pepper mash in a hickory sauce which was absolutely gorgeous. highly recommended. 21/06/05

I went for a meal with my wife, and the service was excellent. We ordered the haddock and warm salad for starters. Then pork and sirloin for main. The meals were great and i would recommend this restaurant to anyone. It will be excellent when draft lager is installed. Without doubt me and my wife and maybe the kids will definately come again. 5*****

On my recent visit to Le Bistro, for my aunties 50th birthday. I have to say both the service and food was impeccable. The menu was very extensive and of the various dishes ordered everything was well up to standard and I highly recommend the food to anybody thinking of going to the Le Bistro.

Me and my husband have been to the La Bistro many times and have never had cause to complain. The food is of great quality and you are left unable to move at the end of your meal. We would recomend La Bistro to our friends and we have on many ocassions.

I booked a table for six to meet up with some old school friends on a Friday night. The service was quick and the staff very polite. The food was perfect, with the chef even changing my meal to cater for my food allergies. It occassionally became a bit loud at times but nothing overwhelming. We stopped in the restaurant up to around two hours after everyone else had gone and the staff were still enthused to keep serving us drinks. We tried a selection of Red Wines with the William Wells red coming top of our list. I will recommend Le Bistro to anyone wanting a good quality meal with service to match, great value. 8 / 10

I have visited this restaurant plenty of times and every time it has been perfect. I totally disagree with Clare Roddison, yes it is busy but its cosy and welcoming and great food. Definately a restaurant to try.

I visited the Bistro on a busy friday evening with my family and i have to say it was absolutly superb. The meal consisted of a four course set menu for about £18 per head. There is a wide range of dishes to choose from on the menu and a good half price selction for children. Me and my wife went for the Fishcake starter which was lovely, while others in our party went for other dishes such as the prawn salad and the brie. Then we had soup for middle course which was minestrone. I decided to go for the Barnsley Chop. It was very tasty and was huge. My family had various other dishes including the chicken and tagliatelle dish and the sirloin steak dish. There was a good selection of deserts which were well sized portions. There is good selction of red and white wines which are of good quality. the restaurant is very small but has a great atmosphere. Space is limited in the restaurant but is very cosy and adds to the atmosphere. We felt very welcomed as we arived and were not dissapointed. Excellent value for money, excellent friendly service, excellent food, 10/10 HIGHLY RECOMENDED.

My husband and I decided to try this restaurant as it was by birthday. I wish I hadn't bothered I would have found better quality and service in a local pub. My chair was covered in stains, and it was like an assault course to get to the toilets. I wasn't aware before going that you had to have the set menu for £15.99, which by the way is a con because for some of the main courses you had to pay extra. We had a starter of garlic mushrooms which was of about the standard of a local takeaway, we didn't like either of the middle courses so skipped that. For main course we decided to pay the £2.50 extra each and have the sirloin steak which was full of fat and tastless. It was accompanied by mushrooms, and a side dish with a few veg,and some sloppy onion thing i don't know what it was.We were that unimpressed we asked for the bill before we were even offered a sweet. Our bill was £40.00 including 2 lagers which isn't really worth it considering we only had two of the courses and were still charged the extra for the steak. I would never go again not even for free!

My girlfriend and myself have been to this restaurant over half a dozen times now after having it recommended by a friend of ours. On each occasion the food has always been excellent with none of the above problems encountered. Yes it is a small and somewhat confined place at the busiest times, but for £15 a head for 5 courses I have never had anty reason to complain. The crab cake starters, and braised lamb main course have always been superb.

Living not far from this restaurant my wife and I went for a nice romantic dinner. Bad mistake. It was overcrowded, the food was under cooked and bland, and the service over rushed. We were sat on a table for two, but the room between us and the next table was non-existent, we might as well have been sat at a table for 10. The waitress were having trouble getting through and people were continually having to move to let them past We ordered off the set course menus which were extensive and looked very interesting. The food arrived at lightening speed and as fast as we finished a course the plates were taken away and the next served. A four course meal in less than 90 minutes, or maybe it was the people around us also eating our meal. Well I hoped they enjoyed it as the meat was undercooked the sauces tasteless the veggies luke warm. The starter and desserts were ordinary. When we mentioned this on paying the bill the reply was as bland as the food and made us feel it was our fault for going on a Saturday night, what did we expect, they were so popular was the comment. Never again.

TJ Parkinson writes:
Your reviewer must have caught the chef on a good day, I booked for my daughters 21 first of the nine meals ordered six were poor for various reasons ie,tasteless sauces undercooked meat flour used as soup thickening not mixed in and left in slimy balls desserts served still frozen.

The service was so slow we could not wait for coffee all for £15 99 per head.
