Bristol Rovers and Doncaster Rovers met at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium in front of 59,024 fans to contest the final of the Johnstone Paint Trophy on Sunday, 1 April 2007. On what would turn out to be an historic day for Doncaster fans, Rovers were boosted by the return of forwards Jason Price and leading scorer Paul Heffernan, both had missed recent matches through injury. Great startIt was a dream start for the South Yorkshire side as loan striker Jonathan Forte put Doncaster in the lead after just 45 seconds. Paul Heffernan played a ball through for Forte who slotted home from six yards with his left foot. ![]() Forte opened the scoring Despite starting and continuing as the better team, Bristol found themselves two-nil down in the fifth minute after leading scorer Paul Heffernan slipped in behind the Bristol defence and finished from Sullivan's clearance. Bristol continued to look the better team as the half progressed, but they weren't able to create chances that would see them claw back the two goal deficit. Half-time. Pegged backJust after the whistle forward Jason Price missed a great opportunity to extend Doncaster's lead further. The Welshman missed the goal with a header, and would prove to be Price's last opportunity to get himself on the score-sheet. He was replaced by Sean Thornton after receiving a bad knock to his left ankle. A few minutes before Price was replaced Bristol pulled a goal back after Sean McDaid was adjudged to have fouled Bristol's Richard Lambert. Richard Walker took the penalty and slotted it home, despite a decent effort from keeper Neil Sullivan. Two-one to Doncaster in the 49th minute. ![]() Graeme Lee celebrates the winner Bristol completed the comeback to level the game in the 62nd minute after some sloppy defending from Doncaster. A James O'Connor foul led to Richard Lambert passing to Bristol's Sammy Igoe who finished with his right foot into the bottom right of Sullivan's net. Two-all. Bristol continued applying the pressure and now looked clear favourites to go on and win the game. In the last 20 minutes Bristol continued applying the pressure and would have taken the lead had it not been for two top class saves from Sullivan. Rovers began the fightback with around 10 minutes remaining, Heffernan went very close in the last few seconds of normal time, but the game was destined for extra time.
Help playing audio/video Final flourishThe first half of extra time was largely a battle of possession, but Rovers looked to be improving. Neither team came particularly close to taking the lead. In the second half a Sean McDaid shot missed the right hand side of the goal as Rovers continued to press. With just over 10 minutes remaining the game saw James Coppinger earn a corner for Doncaster. ![]() Sean O'Driscoll lifts the JP Trophy Rovers scored what would be the winning goal from an inswinging corner from left by-line taken right-footed by Sean Thornton. Doncaster captain Graeme Lee rose above the Bristol defence nodding home from the centre of the penalty area. Rovers held on, the team's fitness showed and despite a great performance Bristol didn't have it in them to make another comeback. Doncaster became the final team to win the JP Trophy in Cardiff.
